November 10th, 2021 08:09 pm - 100 days of enemy recs: 84. Naruto
Naruto is a shonen manga and anime that is perhaps most succinctly described as what Harry Potter would be if everyone was unashamed and open about the fact that their real purpose was training up child soldiers to fight in a forever war.

Naruto is the baby who miraculously survived last generation's great evil, and ended up with that power sealed inside him, and was raised as a pariah and kept in ignorance of that fact.

There are a lot of enemy pairings in this fandom! Perhaps the most obvious is Naruto/Sasuke; Sasuke is the kid who was raised in apparent privilege but actually tragedy who has hate on first site with Naruto, but they come to grudgingly respect each other over their training, until Sasuke defects to the enemy for complicated reasons that we don't find out until much, much later.

There is also a lot of Naruto fic about characters who are part of the enemy Sasuke defects to, but I will admit to not having read much of that, because I stopped following canon before they really showed up. (With long shonen I tend to really like the first, oh, twenty installments or so, but at some point either it has been too long with nothing happening, or too much happening all at once, and I give up.)

Then there's Kakashi/Iruka. Iruka and Kakashi are the Remus and Sirius in the Harry Potter metaphor, if they'd actually had real instutional support and backup in their attempts to train the children. Iruka is Naruto's primary school teacher, who is the closest thing he has to a parental figure for most of his life. Kakashi is the eccentric, traumatize master who is assigned to teach him after he graduates. Their enemyship dynamis is not as dramatic as most of the others in this fandom, but their ship has kind of an odd history - in the beginning of canon, they'd actually had very little interaction, other than getting in a loud fight in an official meeting over the moral issues around the training up of child soldiers. But I guess Japanese fandom latched on to that interaction and started shipping them, and then the marketing picked up on that, so for awhile there was more Kakashi/Iruka merch than there was canon!

So have a Kakashi/Iruka recs set, because their fic tends to be lighter on complicated plot stuff than most of the others.

October 15th, 2021 10:15 pm - 100 days of enemy recs: 65: Bulma/Vegeta
Dragonball is one of those odd, rare fandoms where I know the canon far better than the fandom. I watched a fair amount of the cartoon on afternoon TV back in the 90s, and I relatively recently read the manga series up to volume 39 (which was as far as the 3-in-1 edition had gotten by the time I caught up - I should find those last three somewhere.) But the fandom is to me a vast and unmapped iceberg of which I have seen only the merest floating corner.

Bulma/Vegeta is a pairing that crossed barriers in enemyslash, though. Hatesex during a timeskip that resulted in a largely unexplained baby after the timeskip? Followed by Dad just kind of hanging around insisting he was still an enemy but also not leaving or doing anything even slightly enemy-like until by the time the kid was in school his parents were an old married couple and everyone knew it? Vegeta's slow yet inexorable acceptance that he is now part of Bulma's family and he can't do anything about it gets its own category in all discussions of redemption arcs. So I can't not include it! So here is one fic!

August 12th, 2021 10:34 pm - 100 days of enemy recs: 17. Ace Attorney
Ace Attorney is a video game series about lawyering. Literally everything I know about it comes via fandom osmosis, and I don't honestly read fic for it very often either. Two of the lawyers are named Miles Edgeworth and Phoenix Wright, and Miles is a legendary prosecutor, and Phoenix is a defense lawyer who never gives up, and they oppose each other across the courtroom! But also they have a ... *complicated* history and relationship. People ship them! It's very childhood-friends-to-rivals-to-lovers!

I am 100% not qualified to summarize *or* rec for this fandom! Even less than some of the others I've already done. But this list is as much a history of my engagement with enemies/rivals archetypes as it is a recs collection, so Ace Attorney belongs on it. Because what I do know about Ace Attorney is: it has a kinkmeme. It was one of the early kinkmemes, started in October 2007 (Possibly *the* first to widely crossover from anime fandom into Western slash fandom awareness?), super popular, full of good fic. I saw it mentioned on my lj friendslist often enough, and Miles/Phoenix was so clearly a good match for my enemyship thing, that I popped over out of curiosity and read what was, at the time, the whole thing.

Looking back at it today I remember more of what I learned about canon from it than I thought I would! I remember nothing at all about which fics I most enjoyed, though. I went through the whole thing in a week or so in a sort of delirious haze and then went away again. I tried poking around the fandom on AO3 but it's just not the same. So I thought I'd go look up the old kinkmeme and see if it was still there.

Folks, it's not just still there, it's still running. Same kinkmeme, continuously rolling from one post to the next, no lulls in active prompting and filling, for almost FOURTEEN YEARS.

So, fuckit, today I'm just linking the whole damn fourteen years of kinkmeme.

July 28th, 2021 10:26 pm - 100 days of enemy recs: 3. Weiß Kreuz
Oh random number generator, you do have your ways.

So I was really into reading Weiß Kreuz fanfic for, like, three months about fifteen years ago. It was the sort of fandom where if you mentioned reading the fic but not knowing the canon, people who did know the canon told you that this was a good idea and you should stick with it, so I guiltlessly stayed away. Basically I know enough to know the canon is a glorious mess spread across about five different media and occasionally deliberately inconsistent with itself because reasons? I still poke in to the AO3 tag sometimes just to check in but that's it. So I give no guarantees as to the accuracy of any of the below!

Basically the show is about a team of four people who appear on the surface to be cat-loving florists, but they know a secret - That the rich and powerful, they take what they want, and sometimes the bad guys make the best good guys, so they provide... murder. They murder people. Weiß are assassins working for a semi-government-sanctioned secret organization that that kills criminals that are beyond the reach of the law. Schwarz is another team of assassins (these ones have psychic powers) that work as bodyguards for the main crime family they oppose (the use of German terms is very subtle and nuanced as you can tell). Everyone has complicated and angsty backstories. It's an anime soap opera with murders. It had a fairly large slash fandom for awhile when the anime episodes were coming out in English, and it's still ticking along. People shipped everybody with everybody, good guys and bad guys and all together and there's even a third team of girl assassins if you want a little bit of het in there.

I will admit that I'm looking back at my old del.icio.us bookmarks for this one, so while there are a lot of possible enemyships, I am going to stick to only one here: each of the main teams had a teenager on them, and Weiß's teenager, Omi, eventually discovered that he was secretly the heir of *both* the organization that was running Weiß *and* the organization that was running Schwarz; some plot stuff happened; he embraced his heritage and its moral ambiguity, took on his birth name of Mamoru, grew up and took over leadership the organization, running his own assassin teams, and ended up with Schwarz's former teenage assassin, Nagi, as his personal bodyguard. I think? I think that was all canon, anyway. At least, there is some good fic where adult Mamoru is the leader of the secret organization and Nagi is his bodyguard and they have sexual tension complicated by their pasts, so I will rec some of that for this one, because believe it or not that's at least easier to explain than the necessary backstory for the other enemyships I remember from this fandom.

(...also I was going to exactly date when I was in this fandom c. fifteen years ago by looking up a wip I read at the time that was still updating then, but I found it on AO3 and it's... still updating now... WK will always have a small yet special place in my heart, even if I don't think I'm going to go get caught up on that fic that's now approaching 1000000 words.)

  • My Bodyguard (8139 words) by emungere
    Chapters: 2/2
    Fandom: Weiß Kreuz
    Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
    Relationships: Naoe Nagi/Tsukiyono Omi
Summary: After the last episode of Kapitel, Omi meets his grandfather and makes a new acquaintance online.

Okay I have not read this one in fifteen years but when I scrolled to it on AO3, fifteen-years-ago me was like "Oh yes, that one's a good intro to the pairing setup, you should rec it!" And who can I listen to if not fifteen-years-ago me? (Even if she still needs to finish her wips.)

  • Sailing to Hirugashima (3626 words) (+60000 word sequel) by Daegaer

    Fandom: Weiß Kreuz
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Naoe Nagi/Takatori Mamoru
Additional Tags: Space Opera, Alternate Universe - Space, Friendship, space travel, Psychic Abilities

Space AU? Space AU!! Am I going to be reccing a lot of space AUs in this series? I sure hope so!!

  • You Again (7160 words) by Lady_Ganesh
    Fandom: Weiß Kreuz
    Rating: Explicit
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Naoe Nagi/Tsukiyono Omi
Additional Tags: Future Fic, Awkward Romance, Competence Kink, Telekinesis, Clairvoyance, Father-Daughter Relationship, Telekinetic sex, Oral Sex

Twenty or thirty years post canon, two men whose complicated past is now long in the past meet up again over a bomb, go out to dinner, etc. Just a nice story that feels very settled in a way this fandom rarely does but that the characters ought to deserve.

May 16th, 2012 11:49 pm - Meme Fills Update
...okay, that hypothetical crossover meme has reached levels of ludicrosity previously unattained on this journal.

Here is a list of fills so far:

Dresden Files/Vorkosigan Saga for [personal profile] isis (consisting of some extra bits of canon for the crossover I already wrote for this.)
Temeraire/Princess Bride ideas for [personal profile] finch
Pinkwaterverse/Cthulhu mythos for [personal profile] seekingferret (in which I fail miserably; surely *somebody* can come up with a better one?)
--[personal profile] seekingferret does Major League Baseball/The pirate Rabbi and Thor/Star Trek to my prompts
White Collar/Pirates of the Caribbean and DCU/The Lone Gunmen for [personal profile] elf. (Somebody needs to write a pirates/white collar crossover actually. Desperately. Also need fic now where Frohike tangos with Barbara Gordon, but that's a given.)
some flailing as regards Temeraire/Sherlock Holmes for [personal profile] ellen_fremedon
British Comedian RPF/Vorkogisan Saga for [personal profile] marginaliana (This one got kind of out of hand after [personal profile] lannamichaels tapped in. It probably helps to note that we were borrowing some of the characterization from a previous conversation regarding Aral Vorkosigan, Epic Troll. Also: this article on how traditional Chinese stand-up has fared under communism which I incidentally already had bookmarked, yes I did background research for this bit.) [personal profile] marginaliana asked for a British Comedy RPF crossover and I'm afraid in the elaboration we focused almost entirely on the Barrayar part, but I promise if I actually wrote it there would be a bunch of scenes of David and Charlie and Jimmy and Dara and so on meeting in hidden, poorly-lit back rooms at the university and playing at revolution.
Avengers/Sesame Street for [personal profile] lannamichaels. An excuse to write fic for the Teeny Little Super Guy! Yay!
Homestuck/Colbert Report for [personal profile] erinptah, featuring unbridgeable idealogical differences. And stabs. Mostly stabs.
Homestuck/Vorkosigan Saga for [personal profile] biichan. In which there are fantrolls.
Homestuck/Ranma 1/2 for [personal profile] terajk, featuring [personal profile] brownbetty and [personal profile] biichan contributing their own versions as well, which we must encourage them to write. yes.

Unfilled, still to do (list mostly for my reminder):
Avengers/Young Wizards and Vorkosigan/Avengers (I really need to watch that movie, I guess)
Something Sutcliff/Rihannsu-ish (Every time I poke at this I just come out concluding I need to re-read Rihannsu more. Tragic!)

This is actually an interesting way to find out what fandoms my commenters care about! Avengers yes (kind of obviously) but there's lots of Vorkosigan and Homestuck and Temeraire on there too, hmm.

And yes, I will still fill prompts if people leave them. Not crossovered out yet!

And as usual, all bunnies and notfic posted by me here are completely available for other people to pick up and run with, if you should chance to be so inspired.

December 18th, 2011 09:05 pm - okay posting again anyway
You guys, you guys, you remember the Cordelia Vorkosigan Flimsy Dolls, right? And if you followed the comments, you may have seen me and [personal profile] sara and [personal profile] carmarthen discussing the politics of the Vorhartung Castle Gift Shop, and how somebody should write that story?

Well, [archiveofourown.org profile] miss_lanyon wrote it! As a sequel to Ship Duty, already one of the best recent Vorkosigan fics out there, no less! And you should all go read it because it's brilliant and it's everything it should be. There are old Vor ladies! And stuffed Stegosauri! And Byerly being competent! And Ivan being traumatized by pictures of his mother in her underwear! And discussions of white collar crime and accounting! And many other wonderful things!

A Charity Case: In which Byerly gets a job, Ivan fills in for his mother, the Emperor polishes his retail skills, and the Vorhartung Castle Gift Shop ladies embezzle every mark.

Also, everybody, seriously, you should totally get in the habit of throwing all the random plot bunnies you have out in the open, because I have been doing that, and people keep writing the darn things. It is making my given/recieved ratio on AO3 look completely out of whack, but I don't care, because they are all awesome stories. This is fandom doing what fandom is for! (That is, providing me with a custom drip-feed of the stories I need in my life with minimal effort on my part. ...I mean, um, building new heights of creativity through collaboration and conversation and an ethic of openness of ideas. Yes. that.)

(Now somebody needs to write me the Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane AU set in the Study in Emerald universe. In which Peter is of course a distant descendant of royalty down several lines. Go on. You know you want it now too.)

ETA: btw, [personal profile] terajk is still writing heartwarming Ranma + Ryoga + Akane fic, if you were wondering.

Current Mood:: [mood icon] bouncy

February 3rd, 2011 01:44 am - Victorian crossdressing
I would say the unifying themes of this post, to the extent it has any, are Victoriana, costuming, and crossdressing. Also, Things I Have Scanned. So let's get on it, shall we?

First, people wanted to see the pictures of the 1890s silk dress I was fixing last week, so here they are. )

And while I was scanning those I went ahead and scanned a few other things. )

Meanwhile, I have acquired another supply from my secret-source-of-free-comics-in-return-for-reviews! And they seemed to fit the theme, so, hey, since I have read them all already,a here are scans and reviews:

ADELE BLANC-SEC by Jacques Tardi. )

The CBLDF 2010 Liberty Annual )

Scarlett Takes Manhattan )

And, okay, the other comics that didn't fit the theme. )
