Meme Fills Update
...okay, that hypothetical crossover meme has reached levels of ludicrosity previously unattained on this journal.
Here is a list of fills so far:
Dresden Files/Vorkosigan Saga for
isis (consisting of some extra bits of canon for the crossover I already wrote for this.)
Temeraire/Princess Bride ideas for
finch
Pinkwaterverse/Cthulhu mythos for
seekingferret (in which I fail miserably; surely *somebody* can come up with a better one?)
--
seekingferret does Major League Baseball/The pirate Rabbi and Thor/Star Trek to my prompts
White Collar/Pirates of the Caribbean and DCU/The Lone Gunmen for
elf. (Somebody needs to write a pirates/white collar crossover actually. Desperately. Also need fic now where Frohike tangos with Barbara Gordon, but that's a given.)
some flailing as regards Temeraire/Sherlock Holmes for
ellen_fremedon
British Comedian RPF/Vorkogisan Saga for
marginaliana (This one got kind of out of hand after
lannamichaels tapped in. It probably helps to note that we were borrowing some of the characterization from a previous conversation regarding Aral Vorkosigan, Epic Troll. Also: this article on how traditional Chinese stand-up has fared under communism which I incidentally already had bookmarked, yes I did background research for this bit.)
marginaliana asked for a British Comedy RPF crossover and I'm afraid in the elaboration we focused almost entirely on the Barrayar part, but I promise if I actually wrote it there would be a bunch of scenes of David and Charlie and Jimmy and Dara and so on meeting in hidden, poorly-lit back rooms at the university and playing at revolution.
Avengers/Sesame Street for
lannamichaels. An excuse to write fic for the Teeny Little Super Guy! Yay!
Homestuck/Colbert Report for
erinptah, featuring unbridgeable idealogical differences. And stabs. Mostly stabs.
Homestuck/Vorkosigan Saga for
biichan. In which there are fantrolls.
Homestuck/Ranma 1/2 for
terajk, featuring
brownbetty and
biichan contributing their own versions as well, which we must encourage them to write. yes.
Unfilled, still to do (list mostly for my reminder):
Avengers/Young Wizards and Vorkosigan/Avengers (I really need to watch that movie, I guess)
Something Sutcliff/Rihannsu-ish (Every time I poke at this I just come out concluding I need to re-read Rihannsu more. Tragic!)
This is actually an interesting way to find out what fandoms my commenters care about! Avengers yes (kind of obviously) but there's lots of Vorkosigan and Homestuck and Temeraire on there too, hmm.
And yes, I will still fill prompts if people leave them. Not crossovered out yet!
And as usual, all bunnies and notfic posted by me here are completely available for other people to pick up and run with, if you should chance to be so inspired.

You did say one element of the crossover could be non-fiction, right? So, for the non-fiction, Tom Nagel's classic The View From Nowhere. (As it happens, LT will be down for the next 60 minutes, so I can't check whether you've read this. If you haven't, then my desire to be particularly evil will have been frustrated.) For the fandoms: (1) Earthsea (with an emphasis on Tehanu, if possible); and (2) Riddle-Master.
Well. I deserve whatever I get!

And yet, I'm pretty sure than any crossover that I wrote between those two fandoms would touch on those sorts of themes anyway, so :P (I tend to prefer to get my deep philosophy from SF/fantasy anyway: there's a point at which the language of nonfiction breaks down and I'm spending more time understanding the language than understanding the concepts, whereas fictions allows one to simply draw a world where things are simply true, and let the mind work out how they are true, as nonverbally as necessary. I realize this is an unsupportably mystical POV, though, and mostly an excuse for laziness.)
Anyway!
It's been awhile since I've read both of these, so bear with me if I get bits of the cosmology wrong, but the last time I read them I did in fact takes notes for an attempt at writing a crossover, because, you see, one of the great mysteries about Riddle-Master was always that the Earth-masters, and then Morgon's people, came to the lands from elsewhere, in two waves of settlement: but from where? Theoretically Har et. al. would even remember the old lands, and yet there's nothing about them.
(This opens possibilities for a lot of analysis of themes of colonization in American SF/F, but meanwhile:) and then there's Tehanu, with her stories of the people who dance on the Other Wind (who are not entirely unlike the Earthmasters), and the rumors throughout the Archipelago of lands far off across the ocean.
Anyway, like I said it's been to long to give you many details, but with their systems of magic that are just similar enough, and the themes that run through both series about the ways the lands and the people who live in them shape their own magic, and the dangers of binding away the dark things, I could write a story where the lands that Morgon is in charge of and the Archipelago share a planet, two cultures sundered long ago - possibly Morgon's people being those who disagreed with the things that were undone in The Other Wind, and left? And the Earth Masters being those who never went to the Archipelago in the first place. (I only vaguely remember that book, so that might not be very workable). It would in fact be full of themes of subjectivity/objectivity, the ungraspable nature of reality, and consciousness's attempts to grasp it anyway by describing - and scribing - laws to bound it and bind it, and some way of reconciling the two realms by changing the ways the people relate to those laws.
Also it would probably involve Raederle traveling beyond the end of the sea and meeting Tenar there (and discussing their respective easily distracted consorts), because why wouldn't I, given the chance?

...but I feel like I've already read that one. Maybe it's just so right that my brain is sure it already exists? Possibly there's an existing LOTR crossover in another fandom that takes the same matter-of-fact approach...
And really TBH it's more likely that Torchwood would screw up the whole thing entirely and, like, Ianto would have to take out a
QueenJack grown as beautiful and terrible as the moon! Treacherous as the seas! ...only for Ianto to fall prey to the ring himself, and eventually Martha shows up with her patent-pending Unit-produced Evil Ring Destructo ray, takes care of things, pats them all on the head, passes out band-aids and goes home. :D(Meanwhile Sarah Jane has turned it into a Teachable Moment for the kids; she's not particularly worried, I mean, she met Sauron back in the day, and he wasn't all that, even with the ring, she's pretty sure that K9 and Rani and Clyde could take care of the matter and still be up for school the next morning.
She's right, too.
The one immutable rule of the expanded Doctor Who universe is that Sarah Jane and crew can do it better than you.)
