Things I Learned Today

So it turns out that back in the day, Sesame Street used to have a lot of current pop songs performed on it. And there was a Songs From Sesame Street LP, which I have now held in my own hands.

...Apparently "Yellow Submarine" is 'a song that teaches about colors and making friends', "Good Morning Starshine" 'teaches about distance and space', and "Feelin' Groovy (59th street bridge song)" is about 'learning to be cheerful and good-natured'.

...Apparently the original creators of Sesame Street spent a lot of time stoned out of their minds. This explains a lot.

Well... they're not wrong. Though that explains, perhaps, why my parents are so fond of it.

My mom tell fond stories of getting together to watch it in the lounge of her college dorm every afternoon.

No, I can maybe buy 'yellow submarine' and 'feelin' groovy' but there is *no way* you can learn about astronomy from "Good Morning Starshine". Because I'm pretty sure this just had the original lyrics, and - no.

And I remember a skit where they spun "Let It Be" into "Letter B," all about things that begin with 'B'.

Huh. See, if I'd gotten the impression they were changing the words to make it more 'educational', that would make more sense (and be more like the Sesame Street I remember, which had a fair amount of that kind of stuff in it.) But I got the impression from both the record and my mother that these were with the original, un-altered lyrics. Which are very toddler-friendly, yes, but that's because, you know, stoned.
