It's a weird day, y'all, and it's been awhile since I've done something like this, so: have a shipping meme.

Give me a fandom in the comments and I will tell you which pairing or poly ship in that fandom:

1. Is the forever ship of my heart
2. Is the one I don't have a lot of feelings about but know I can always go back to for long comfort fic
3. Has the best porn
4. Is just NO

(Caveat: fandom must be large enough to have significant amounts of fic for at least four pairings)
(Caveat 2: it does not have to be a fandom you have heard me talk about much or recently, because let's face it, if it has that much fic I have probably read enough to be able to answer these, although that is not a dare.)
(Caveat 3: all answers to 4 are in the spirit of ykinmkato because I am enough of an Old to believe in that.)

2. Sam/Frodo or Merry/Pippin or really just, Hobbits
3. I actually have never gone to this fandom for porn? I feel like I have read some good dwarf-on-dwarf stuff, but nothing stands out. (Probably I should go looking for Silm-era Sauron fic and see what turns up, I suspect that is where the porn I would be interested in is.)
4. Bilbo/Thorin. Maybe if I had managed to get through all the Hobbit movies I would understand, but I have many better things to do with my time, like watching paint dry, and so I do not understand. (Also, anything with Turin Turambar. Asshole, he deserved everything that happened to him.)

Legolas/Gimli was the first LotR slash pairing I ever read, written well before the Jackson films, with (as I recall) explicit details about dwarf vs elf penises. I wonder who wrote it? Amy Fortuna, perhaps?

I never could get into hobbitsmut -- it's a failing -- but even leaving the randy hobbits aside, there's a looooot of smut. Hyper promiscuous elves, Tyellas's ansereg (elven bdsm), Vulgarweed's wonderful 2nd age Sauron story, Eomer/horses, even some entish action.

I managed to sit through part 1 of The Hobbit, but it was so bad I've successfully avoided the others. Normally I like Armitage but the whole concept of Thorin as relatively young is just wrong.

I know there's a fair amount of interesting porn in the fandom (I recall one striking one featuring Frodo and the Watcher in the Water) but all the best stuff I remember is rarepairs, I can't think of a particular pairing I go to for porn, and most of the pairings that have been popular enough in the post-movie era to get a lot of explicit fic are pairings I'm not really interested in. Probably if I decided to go deep into pre-3rd-age Sauron-ish stuff I would find my niche.

I'm probably being slightly unfair on Hobbit fandom - the first one, that I also sat through, *was* very pretty, and it did have the Seventh Doctor with a rabbit sledge. And I could see how Bilbo/Thorin was inevitably going to be the pairing that came out of that, but it had nothing to do with them in the books, and also if I want a pairing that is mostly about one of them being condescending and overprotective to the other there's plenty of canon het ships I can look at.

The Seventh Doctor with the rabbit sledge was the only part of the film that felt at all like the book.

Emilyenrose on ao3 is writing some AMAZING silmarillion focused stuff - I did not know or care who Feanor was or how he ruined everything for everyone forever before I started reading her fics, and now I really really do. Plus, Sauron/Maedhros Weird Elf Pon farr, if that interests you.

I think I might have been over-estimating the entish smut component; the story I was particularly recalling is Vulgarweed's gorgeous but melancholic Lomendánar (Little Love for the Things of My Love) which was written for lbgtfest. She's also written By Root and Twig (Merry/Pippin/Treebeard), which might be more what you are looking for and does indeed feature pollen.

The pioneering sexy-ent writer I recall is Teasel: How Quickbeam got his name, but it's sadly only a drabble. I thought she'd written some more, but I can't find it.

Oh, I podficced Lomendánar years ago; it's a lovely fic!

I'll check out the others and see if it matches my idea of entish smut. In my head, the ents would be just barely touching each other and the rest would basically be plant pollination, but you know, it's all in how they'd experience it.

Although now I'm wondering--some trees have both male and female blossoms at the same time, and some have only male blossoms one year, but another year they can have female blossoms. So the divide between ents and entwives wouldn't really be that clear. Or maybe that divide is more about whether they want to live in wilderness or traditional agricultural landscapes than gender anyway. And it doesn't seem like they're limited by tree species boundaries in who they're attracted to--I mean, Treebeard who is beech or oak-like talks about a birch maiden. Hmm.

Your gender ideas are fascinating; you should write them! I'd definitely assumed that different tree species would pair, but you are of course right that that's hardly the natural reproductive method...

I would like to! But I can't seem to make ent reproductive biology work without it either being botanically inaccurate or incompatible with canon. : ( I made a post about it here, do come help me out...
