November 5th, 2021 11:57 pm - 100 days of enemy recs: 80. Genghis Khan
The music video of Genghis Khan is clearly a takeoff of Perry/Doof. It's the same setup - mad scientist falls for the secret agent who thwarts him! - but there's no platypodes involved so honestly once I'd seen the Perry/Doof version it just kind of pales in comparison?

It is a perennial five-minute-fandom in exchanges though, so there's some pretty good fic, all of which goes hard on the enemyslash tropes!

  • It's a cheat somewhere (5431 words) by Solshine
    Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: Genghis Khan - Miike Snow (Music Video)
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Additional Tags: I'm not even trying to tag them with my made up character names, i don't know what this is, turn away don't look don't remember me this way
    Summary:

Dr. Dominik Vergoldetschnauz would have enough problems if Agent Bradley Ellington were only his nemesis. Unfortunately, it's more complicated than that.

  • Just like in the pulp magazines (1696 words) by adreadfulidea
Fandom: Genghis Khan - Miike Snow (Music Video)

Additional Tags: Pastiche, Spy Movie Parody, Bad Parenting, Plotting World Domination, lying, Femslash
    Summary:

Doctor Vipera - aka Elle Murphy of 89 Crosslet Vale, Greenwich, England - had a plan. It was immaculate, as her plans always were; she did not take kindly to being derailed. And by a dilettante in a rumpled tuxedo, at that. Fucking Double-Oh. Elle knew for a fact he practiced his seduction routines in the mirror.

October 21st, 2021 09:22 pm - 100 days of enemy recs: 69. Jolene
You know that thing where you just hate someone so much that you can't stop thinking about how perfect they are? Their emerald eyes and auburn hair? Their beauty that's beyond compare and smile like a breath of spring? The way they're so attractive they could have anyone they wanted?

And then you realize that wait maybe that isn't "hate" that's keeping you up at night?

Dolly Parton, Tumblr and AO3 have you sorted.

(The Lil Nas X cover of the song was nominated for yuletide, but I suspect the fanworks that come out of that will be less femslashy.)

October 18th, 2021 11:46 am - 100 days of enemy recs: 2/3rds of the way!
Two third of the way through! I honestly didn't think I'd be making it this far. (even if I am taking a lot more skip days than when I started...)

Instead of posting recs (...possibly because I am still too busy re-reading Of Old Mystics to have put together the next set), here is the spotify playlist I put together from everybody's help on the 50-day entry:

Best Nemeses

It is currently at 59 songs and four hours. It is not the least bit cohesive and probably best listened to on random, so my strange music tastes mix in a little bit better with everyone else's. I think it is set up now so that other Spotify users can also add songs.

It doesn't include any Broadway/Musical tracks because it quickly became clear that I could to a whole other playlist with only musicals, which I may yet do!

Also, two more playlists on the theme from [personal profile] skygiants: Confused adrenaline response and Big obsessive nemesis energy.

And a playlist for waltzing with your enemy ♛ (dark royalty core) which rolls across my tumblr now and then. Good for writing to!

March 26th, 2018 07:00 pm - Radio Presets
Speaking of radio, that music meme was going around recently and one of the questions was "How do you listen to music?" and I realized the answer for me is FM radio. I've gone through phases of cassettes and LPs and CDs and MP3s and streaming services, but it's always most consistently been broadcast radio, because broadcast radio just plain works with zero effort or decision-making required on my part.

(Even for long roadtrips, I like to see what quirky radio stations I can tune into instead of listening to music I brought, which unfortunately tends to work best when there is nobody else in the car to annoy with it.) Thirty years from now, we will all be listening to whatever thirteenth-generation media format is out there on our cyperpunk implants from our undergrounds bunkers, and I will still be listening to broadcast radio (because I guarantee there will still be broadcast radio.)

Anyway, here are my current radio presets. If you live in the DC/Baltimore metro area, these are mostly recs. If you don't, uh, this is me being smug about living in a place where I can pick up about a dozen noncommercial FM radio stations without trying very hard. :P Also most of them have internet livestreams I guess.

links to livestreams coming if I get less lazy )

Do you still listen to radio? What are your go-to stations?

September 9th, 2017 01:48 pm - yuletide etc.
So, Yuletide noms are open!

I am definitely nominating:

The Saga of Burnt Njal (with characters from Njal's generation - all the existing fics are post-canon about Kari)
The Girl With The Silver Eyes by Willo Davis Roberts (because we all had a discussion on one of [personal profile] rachelmanija's FMK posts about how we all wanted MORE after we read that.)

I can't decide on number three, and I'm pretty sure the other stuff I definitely want to request will have other noms. So:

Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 22

My third yuletide nomination should be:

View Answers

Always Coming Home by Ursula K. Le Guin
15 (68.2%)

The Hidden Almanac (the podcast)
6 (27.3%)

King's Blood (Steve Jackson games)
1 (4.5%)

Mr. Trash Wheel RPF
4 (18.2%)

I am also trying to at least finish the first chapter of the Discworld Sedoretu fic before I let myself read any of the fics that are now revealed in the fest, but I have not yet. :/

Instead, have some reviews of the CDs I bought for $.10 each this morning:

Delmarva Groove Kings
Genre: Is "Groove" a genre?
Local kitsch factor: Well, "Delmarva" is in the title, but they appear to actually be from Clinton, which isn't really Delmarva? Also we're pretty sure the bridge on the cover is the Golden Gate, not the Chesapeake. 2/5
Cover art: Oil painting of a viking ship sailing past a decaying suspension bridge against a red sky. -1 point for not being the right bridge and for not having any cover credits so I can't track down the original. 4/5
Song titles: Titles include "Northeast Corridor Blues", "Evil", and "Dueling Hillbillies on the Mother Ship". 4/5
Music: Ehh? Some of the songs appear to be just screaming over boring electric guitar chords, but some of the more bluesy ones are pretty okay. 3/5
Comment: This was originally a benefit to pay for someone's cancer treatment. Why do I still live in a county where people think it's ok that you have to sell benefit CDs to pay for someone's cancer treatment.

Celtic Fury - O'Malley's March
Genre: Basic American Celtic
Local Kitsch Factor: Yep, it's O'Malley as in Governor Martin O'Malley! This was his band's first CD, that they put out while he was still just on the city council. 5/5
Cover Art: Black-and-white photo of the band. TERRIFYINgLY BAD PHOTOS. Two of them look like they are planning to lure you into a white van, one of them looks like he is wearing a human mask and hasn't quite learned how to make it smile yet, and one of them looks like they stuck a dead person's head on a mannequin. O'Malley hardly looks sinister at all in comparison, which may be a first. 1/5
Song Titles: Mostly your basic sort of Celtic standards, but there is one called "Mickey Chewing Gum" and one called "Streets of Baltimore". 3/5
Music: Would hire them to play on one of the outdoor stages at a street fair. Competent. The lead singer sounds weirdly insincere about everything he sings, but maybe that's just because I know it's O'Malley. 3/5
Comment: It's autographed by the whole band! I wonder if I could sell the Governor's autograph for more than I paid for the CD. ...Actually I probably know some people who would pay me at least twice that just to burn it while cackling.
