Hi! I am still way behind on internets stuff (I have something like twenty fic tabs up, and yes,
damned_colonial, I'll do those AoS posts eventually), but I did at least catch up on comments to my own posts, and related things.
It's been ages since I had a post with collapsed comments; I forget how much sheer *time* it takes to stay abreast, not to mention social energy. And I now have more people watching this account than I had watching my LJ at any point over the five years I had it. So - hi? I have no idea how people with hundreds of circle people do it.
I also read a bunch of the other 13th Child posts, and all the ST responses I had open, commented on a bunch of them, and then rapidly lost track of which ones I needed to reply back to. Oops.
But! The poll has spoken!
starry_sea exists! If you want to get in on me trickling out fair copies of all the pirate TOS e-books I torrented, you should join. Also you should join if you want to talk about ST:TOS, the Star Trek books, why the new movie missed the point but was fun anyway, and the other sorts of ST things I tend to maunder on about. Also if you would like to come on as a co-mod, please speak up; I tend to be very laid-back about modding and co-modding. I will hopefully have an intro post up by tomorrow, and some book re-read stuff shortly thereafter.
Also, one thing I kept seeing in the movie reaction posts was people who liked the movie but had no inspiration to write fic about it. I had the opposite reaction: I never had much inspiration to fic for the original continuity (well, except in Rihannsuverse), partly because there was so much already there. But the movie hit that balance for me of "this is fun and full of interesting bits, but it's actually really terrible" that makes me want to fic it.
So here, for sharing, are the stories I now want to write about ST:Reboot. Please write them (or link me to them), so I don't have to:
1. The one where Young Spock mind-melds with Kirk in order to find out more about Spock Prime, only to realize from the remains of Spock Prime's mind-meld that they had a mating bond, and then very quietly and subtly freaks out. (This one doesn't have to be reboot-verse Kirk/Spock - it might almost be cooler if it wasn't - but I want that story.)
2. The one where Ambassador Spock and Ambassador Sarek lead the refugee Vulcans to make a new home - on ch'Rihan. They come to the Romulans in humility and asking only for condescension, the Romulan goverment gloats like mad and gives them land on ch'Havran and totally fails to understand the depth of social engineering that a bunch of pissed-off homeless Vulcans led by Ambassador Spock are capable of. Also Spock marries the Romulan Commander and Sarek marries Ael and she gets to be Ruling Queen after all, or at least Head of Surak's House after T'Pau, which by that point is basically the same thing.
3. The one where Number One comes back from her year-long sabbatical on, I dunno, Hamal, takes one look at the Enterprise's new bridge crew, and goes totally righteous on their asses. (Preferally a Number One of color, as was originally planned, because, srsly, kickass.) Also, work in the story of Captain Pike as disabled veteran - either doing the hard work of rehab, or, y'know, learning how to continue to be an active-duty starship officer despite the changes in his capabilities, because it seems to me that a ship designed to accomodate all six-hundred-eighty-three species of humanity in all of their infinite diversity ought to be the very definition of fully accessible. Also, Pike/Number One.
4. The Awesome Academy Adventures of Kirk & McCoy, BFF (plus the story of Uhura and her roommate and Spock the dishy TA. It would be a story that was all about gender and how a woman can never not be about sex, even in this future, and a lot about Orion society, and exactly how much it must have changed in the 25 years since the reboot started for a woman to be in Starfleet Academy.)
5. The one where, before he leaves Earth, Spock Prime goes to England and says hi to the Slash Dragon. (Oh, c'mon, don't claim you weren't thinking it. And Spock & company totally met Merlin - or at least someone who was ripped off from tOaFK Merlin - in "Strangers from the Sky".)
6. The one where the reboot Doctor detects a temporal anomaly, Spock Prime becomes a companion, and there is lots and lots of gratuitous endangered species mind-sex. Luckily,
stellar_dust is on this already, and you should all go and volunteer to beta for her, so she isn't stuck with me doing it again!

I also like the first and the third story quite a bit. You should do them.
(I like the rest of the ideas too, but those are my favourites)

Because you *know* Orion chick has to be insanely intelligent to have gotten into the Academy in the first place. And she's all, "Yup, I do sleep with a lot of guys. But I kicked your ass on that last test."
no subject
I would so, so kill for this. You are so right about Orion-chick. (Also, Spock as the dishy TA!!)

Actually, in my head, Pike went to Iowa specifically to get Kirk to join Starfleet, because hell if I can figure out why else he took a bunch of freshman on a field trip to the Midwest.

And, yeah, Pike mentioned aptitude tests, but it's Starfleet! You're supposed to have to work to get in! Anyone with half a braincell can ace the ASVAB. (Perhaps I will fanwank it that this Starfleet Academy has legacy admissions.)

Also, please write the others, especially 1 and 4 kthx.

And the Doctor, and Princess Leia - I can write them, because they deal with it dysfunctionally and badly and with lots of denial and compartmentalizing, so I can write around it, or put it in the cracks instead of the foreground. But that's not what Spock would do.

What rings right about mine, btw? I was worried he would seem flat and out of character, because I've never written him before, and also I didn't feel like the Doctor was totally in character for that scene. *bites nails*
no subject
I think 'flat' actually works for him, in that place and time. It's the people writing him as perfectly normal, post-movie, that I can't quite get with. And Ten was being Ten. Ten is Ten is Ten is Ten.
