100 days of enemy recs: 77. Aurora/Maleficent
So this wasn't even on my original list, because, while I was certainly aware it was out there, and it was one of those rare and precious f/f enemyslash ships, I don't usually go looking for pairings that have weird age gap/familial vibes going on, unless they do very specific things to balance the power dynamics. anyway if I want that I can just re-read my McCaffrey FT&T collection. Plus, I bonded early on the delightful mentorship relationship between Princess Amethyst Alexandra Augusta Araminta Adelaide Aurelia Anne and the Fairy Crustacea, which is entirely platonic, and Maleficent will never out-fairy-godmother Crustacea.
(Also, I always get to a certain point in any version of Sleeping Beauty and get distracted thinking about the economic and societal implications of banning spinning, or certain types of spinning technology, in a fairy tale kingdom. Is it set in a period when great wheels with pointed spindles were becoming obsolete, and it was a boon for the new technology? Or when hand-spindles were still common and banning wheels brought them back? Was all spinning banned? Did the King actually understand anything about the necessity of home spinning among the peasant classes, the different spinning technologies in use and the likelihood of pricking yourself on any of them? Was the old woman with the hidden spindle who shows up in some stories part of a deliberate campaign of resistance? Did it suit Maleficent's broader political purposes to disrupt the local textile industry? Or the King's? Or Philip's father's? Someone find me a Sleeping Beauty adaptation that's all about textile-based medieval economies, technological change and social upheaval.)
But, we put on the Maleficent movie last night while waiting for trick-or-treaters, and y'all. That movie was just *blatantly* somebody's Aurora/Maleficent fanfic, with just barely enough parental vibes thrown in to give Disney plausible deniability. They had a wedding scene at the end!!!!
So I added it onto the list and then the randomizer immediately gave it to me. So you get to follow me into my first foray into a new-to-me pairing!

In which Aurora is a barista and Maleficent is an ageless being of unknowable power (or possibly just an older lesbian who actually has her life together. Same thing really.)

(also you might want to check out Spindle's End by Robin McKinley if you haven't already? it's not that at all, but it's also not a version without spinning wheels, because the story McKinley wanted to tell didn't involve breaking the textile industry, and how they avoid sharp spindles without doing away with spinning wheels is plot-foundational enough it's the title)

I have not read Spindle's End! I feel like a complicated explanation of how they avoided sharp spindles would also set me off though, since a spindle doesn't really need to be much sharper than a knitting needle in the first place. IIRC most of the older versions of the story, told while spindles were still a familiar thing, just had her pricked by a splinter while spinning, which is something that has happened to me! (and could totally be deadly pre-modern medicine anyway, if you were unlucky and/or cursed.)

(Like, as a super aroace person, I am all there for "True Love's Kiss doesn't have to be romantic!" but. That's not the story they told in that movie.)
