a thousand rainy days since we first met

[livejournal.com profile] zamochit posted sexy pictures of her typewriter yesterday. Mine's not quite as svelte, but she's been through a lot, and she deserves to be shown off:

Mmm, the smell of ink and WD-40. (And that's real onionskin paper we found when we were cleaning out the attic.) However, either I've forgotten something real important, or the tab stops are jammed, so I haven't been using it much lately. And the top of the case is shoved under the desk istead of keeping the dust out like it should be. (I don't have a new haircut to show off, either. I really ought to get on that.)

I spent most of the day trying to wedge my Christmas presents into my room. And while I was at it, I messed with my LibraryThing account. It currently has all the new books we got for Christmas, about half of my library of magical/paranormal/mythical books, and all the books that I found while cleaning today. I'm also going to try to eventually post one-paragraph reviews of all the ones I've read recently enough to remember - you can see all my reviews so far here (and even syndicate them to your flist if you so desire!)

Let's see - I watched the new SciFiFri yesterday. I can't believe CSM died! Nooo! You should have stayed home with Fox and Sam. ): And we need more Jack. We need mini!Jack to show up and claim Orlin is his little brother and steal him away and take him on a tour of the delights of Earth, featuring ferris wheels very heavily. Yes.

Atlantis was neat. I wasn't *quite* spoiled - that is, I knew generalities about what we'd find out in the episode, but no specifics as to what would actually happen. Rodney was *awesome*. The stuff on the Wraith ship was pretty cool, too; not just the new info about the Wraith, but the way they've all gotten so comfy on hive ships that they practically feel at home. And we now have official confirmation that Liz is a better strategist than Caldwell.

BSG was pretty cool, but I'm still ... not very fond of how slowly it moves and how shaky the "plot" actually is. I mean, I love all the characters, and I usually enjoy it while watching it unless something more interesting is happening elsewhere, but it's really too soapy for me. The weaponless dogfight and the way the two sides seamlessy became one when the Cylons showed up was one of the more *awesome* space sequences I've ever watched, though.

I caught Bones on Tuesday - actually Mom taped it while I was in class. Thanks Mom! This was a fairly early re-run, I think. Interesting. I don't know if I'd still be watching this show if not for stellar_dust - it hasn't totally grabbed me, and I know if I learn to like it I'm in danger of falling into the CSI/L&O trap - but it's still fun. I haven't seen any more Boston Legal; something keeps conspiring against me, and I really should watch more than 1.5 episodes before I try to write crack!fic. (Maybe that's why I'm feeling conspired against ...) On the other hand, I just learned that it's set in the Ally McBeal 'verse, which is making me go a little queasy.

Haven't been watching much House, either - no new eps, and I've now seen all the old ones at least twice. And not enough good new fic to keep me in the mindset, either. I keep thinking I should try to write something, but I keep getting stuck on repeat with House saying "You're just enough of a bastard to be worth liking, Dr. Wilson," and Wilson replying, "Yeah? Well, remember, I'll always know that deep down inside, you're actually a good guy." Where exactly to I go from there? (Actually, what I *really* want is House/Wilson set while House is living with Stacy. The fandom needs more past!fic in general.)

I wish I had a typewriter so that I could jump on the mini-bandwagon and post pics of mine, too. Or failing that, I wish I could get ahold of my grandfather's awesome Soviet typewriter.

Alas, the closest thing I've got is my laptop keyboard (with black electrical tape over the letter keys to force self to type properly). Not nearly as sexy.

That's so sad. Everybody ought to have a typewriter. Although an old Soviet one sounds *madly* sexy. We have an old typewriter of my grandfather's downstairs - the kind with the flat round black keys - but it weighs about two tons so I rarely mess with it.

I learned to type properly by going Dvorak. You should try it! (I wonder what my chances are of ever getting hold of a Dvorak typewriter. Probably not very good.)

Your typewriter is sexy in that voluptuous, older-woman way. I also like your quill pen.

The quill pen was, I believe, given to me by [livejournal.com profile] zodiaccat. (It's a cheat - it has a ballpoint nib.) The tall one behind it is a real pheasant tailfeather, though. Too bad I cut the nib myself and it's too broken to write very well.

Nice typewriter!

Grew up with several of the things, wrote my freshman papers on mine before the computer clusters opened with WP for DOS. I still remember the mad running around during finals week looking for anyone or any store that still has correction tape and isn't sold out. Also have less-than-fond memories of having to qualify on the big Selectrics for temp jobs. I miss the sound that the keys made, though, all that clatterbanging really made you feel like you were doing something awe-inspiringly productive. :)

Thanks!

I was in the last class at my high school that learned to type on Selectrics. And I'm glad I did, but I don't think I'd want to do it full-time. The manual ones are very fun- the noise! the smells! the motion! - but the keys are so stiff compared to a laptop that I'd probably blow out my wrists after two weeks of using it at my normal rate.
