You know, for once I'm actually *trying* to write in blatantly American English, and I can't keep the Britishisms out? Curses. Stupid language.
Thus, a dialect ponderable: (Which has nothing to do with what I'm writing, but anyway.)
I had three Earth Science lectures today, and each of the lecturers spent a significant amount of time fiddling with the visuals to get them to work. One of them had viewgraphs, one of them had overheads, and one of them had slides. That is, they were all the same thing: those sheets of plastic that go in a projector that in high school I called "transparencies."
I have a feeling it's less a regional variation than a cultural one: "viewgraph" sounds more corporate to me, "overhead" is sort of casual shorthand, "transparency" is more precise and academic. As for "slides", never heard that one before; he was a guest lecturer. He also described our exam review as "groovy" and acted out the three parameters of the Milankovich Effect, mind.
Anyway, *I* found it interesting.
Also? It's really nice for once to not have any papers or projects due during finals or the week before. I can just kick back and study. I don't think I've ever had that before, even in high school. Enjoy it while it lasts. :P All the geo seniors were mourning over how badly they did in Thesis. . .
