Self esteem's for everyone!

Did I mention I love October?

One of the evil mutant squirrels is losing its tail. It must be the same one I saw last week-- at that point, it only had a bald and inflamed-looking patch in the middle. When I saw it today, it had lost the last half of its tail, and most of the rest was hairless, pink, and gangrenous-looking. It also seemed to have lost whatever residual caution of humans it had (although the evil mutant squirrels are notorious for lacking caution anyway); I knelt down to talk to it and it came within a foot of my hand without even the bribe of food. I found an old pop-tart in my bag and gave it half of it, even if it did look almost as sleek and sinister as the others.

I think I will try to remember to say hi to it the rest of the fall; I've been meaning to make friends with the evil mutant squirrels for a while. My first year, there were only two or three of them over by the bio and ag buildings; now, they're just as common all over campus as the regular gray ones. I imagine within a few years they will have totally taken over squirrel society and be ready to start on humankind. Which is one reason it might be wise for me to start making friends with them now . . .

My aunt had an albino squirrel for a while. They're not common but they show up every so often.

Mutant black squirrels slowly taking over campus, though=evil.

Mom says they always make her think of Mirkwood and Gollum.

At my old place in MD (ahh those were....days) we had the largest and most daring raccoons. Standing on all fours, i swear one of them was big enough for me to ride in middle school. Sometimes I wish I had tried to ride it. Then I remember I like not having a lot of scars and missing fingers.

Hey the friend of mine that has the pictures of the white squirrel seems surprised by the 'black' squirrels I mention, can you snag me a few pics from campus?

Mutant squirrel society

Beware, Beware, consider your self warned. There is a segment of our society that is pretending to be friendly with humans. They even at times will take on the appearance of injury just to play on the sympathy of the human population. This is where the caution should come in, they carry dangerous illnesses, to humans that is, for example rabies and other variously named evils. It is especially important not to allow them to get close as they are fast and can be vicious. It is nice that you are attentive but this can cause you great harm.

Yours in animal friendship,

Me

I know rabies is a risk with squirrels, although not a particularly large one. But as this one has been hanging about for over a week, and is acting neither unusually friendly nor vicious, and ate something while I was watching, I doubt it's rabid. And it would be hard to fake having your tail rot off. Not to mention that if there were rabies on campus, we'd probably know about it.

And I know they're plotting to take over. I just happen to think that having contacts among them will leave me in a better position after the Revolution. I certainly wouldn't be naive enough to *trust* one, though, leave your mind at rest.
