Questions Answered
Since I'm fairly sure everyone who's reading this who cares finished Harry Potter book 5 long ago, I'm going to stop worrying about spoilers. For example, a quote that gives away the means for Voldemort's final defeat:
"Voldemort's anger would make sense if he was no nearer to laying hands on the weapon, whatever it was. . .Had the Order thwarted him, stopped him from seizing it? Where was it kept? Who had it now?
'Mimbulus mimbletonia,' said Ron's voice."
p. 383, us hardback.
I was going to put up new icons, but I seem to have lost the scanner power cord! Waaah!
Some people asked me questions?
-What's this fascination with people falling in love with their mortal enemies?
It's an ancient tradition to believe that level of hostility is really just sublimated lust. See: any of Shakespeare's comedies. See: Calvin/Susie. See: *Canon* Lily/James. This is defined as a love/hate relationship. In the HP fandom, the prevalance of Harry/Draco (which I really think is so popular primarily for esthetic reasons) has led to it becoming a major element in dreaming up ships of all sorts. I amuse myself shipping Ron/Draco because all the arguments H/D people put forward really apply so much more to R/D. Only that pairing isn't nearly so pretty. (As someone once said, "Their kids will have pink hair!") Ahem.
- Is Percy still dating Penelope Clearwater?
As she isn't mentioned at all in book four or five, your guess is as good as mine.
. . . although if you listen to the Percy slashers, it was all a sham anyway.
- Why aren't there any 6th or 7th year prefects?
There are, Harry just doesn't notice them at all.
The same way he never noticed any clubs except Quidditch until it became a plot point.
- Why wasn't Dumbledore afraid to talk to Harry at the end of the book - surely Voldemort wasn't weakened *that* badly this time ..
Dumbledore realized that his "ignore Harry" strategy had backfired, and Voldemort is less dangerous to have around than an angry, badly informed Harry Potter.
- Ok, lots of people are whingeing about characters saying "damn". I have no problem with the concept, but it does lead to some interesting speculation. I seem to recall wizards saying things like "good god!" in earlier books, too. Either 1) some wizards are practicing Christians, 2) wizards pick up swear words from Muggles, or 3) HP magic could really be the old-fashioned, good vs. evil = god vs. devil sort ...
Actually, this has been brought up a lot in the fandom. They have Easter and Christmas, too. I'd always just assumed that their religion was about like my idea of religion in Britain in general (british people feel free to correct me on this): a culture informed by Christianity but not actually, in general, practicing it. And with the muggle-borns and half-breeds, they'd pick up on some muggle religion anyway. On the other hand, all the "beyond the veil" stuff has me thinking that wizarding religion is rather like Spiritualism.
-Are you taking requests for fanfics? I wouldn't mind seeing:
1) post-book-V, realistic Harry/Luna;
2) conversation between Harry and Cho while he's sitting alone by the lake at the end.
1)I find it difficult to connect the concepts of "Luna" and "Reality".
2)Yes. That is a lovely idea. Write that, do.
1. Apart from reading/writing fiction (which i STILL say are related hobbies), what hobbies take up your time?
Sewing stuff (quilting, knitting, embroidery), painting and drawing and CG, webcomics, messing about with programming and attempting to learn Unix, playing several instruments extremely badly, poetry, playing outside . . . umm, check my interests list--
2. So as not to go into a trite "Where do you see yourself in 10 years" thing, I'll ask: Where do you see yourself in 2 years?
Hopefully, graduating from college, and either heading out to grad school or a year off that involves travelling by myself, writing, and research.
3. If you could change any one aspect of yourself; physically, personality-ly, mentally, spiritually, geographically, mathematically, sporadically, franticly or any other -ly, what would you change?
I am badly in need of gumption, getupandgo, and sticktoitiveness.
4. How did you first get into HP?
Don't actually remember. Heard several reports about it as a phenomenon, then about the time the third book came out, the women of our family acquired book one in paperback. It *may* have been a birthday present to me from mom, don't recall. After that, I loved all the books and talked about them with people of all sorts and ages, but didn't get involved with the "fandom" as such (infact, my sister was if anything more into it) until the CoS movie came out, where I made the fateful mistake of looking up fanfiction sites of which I had heard, and couldn't-stop-reading.
5. What kind of glove, if any, would you recommend for torch-carrying? (Need to know, been holding this thing for 2 years now.)
Murtlap skin.
6. And finally, what is your opinion of "pointed" questioning?
Subtlety is key.

(Anonymous) 2003-07-05 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)I mention the prefects because it seems one of them ought to be more practiced at disciplining Fred and George than Hermione, but maybe they've just learned not to bother.
Harry wasn't feeling murderous towards Dumbledore, either. 1) This was an actual plot mistake, 2) Harry was still all emotional for Sirius so Voldemort couldn't get in, and Dumbledore knew this, or 3) it will all be explained in Book VI.
Didn't you catch a bit of H/L chemistry, at the end there? I'm not supporting anything real, I just think it'd be fun to read.
I had a dream last night I was at Hogwarts taking an OWL about the literary merits and plot points of the Harry Potter books. It was very stressful. I think I'm spending too much time on this.

I would imagine they've learned not to bother. PLus, they don't know Mrs. Weasley. And they probably wouldn't know as much about Fred and George's plans, either; certainly nobody else would have properly interpreted that ad.
Voldemort was probably too weak at the time to try again-- although I would debate you on the *Harry feeling murderous* bit, but that was all him.
Oh, yes, I saw the Harry/Luna chemistry too. I think that was real. I just don't think *Luna* is very in touch with reality.
Give into the dark side.
