Be kind to your web-footed friends, for a duck may be somebody's brother.

I am American!

I am not a fundamentalist Christian or a gun-toting gangsta,
And I live in a suburb, but I don't drink watery beer or own an SUV.
And I don't respect Dubya, Ashcroft, or Rumsfeld,
Although I'm sure those who do are fine people, just misguided.
I live in a democracy, not a theocracy.
I watch ITN and BBC World News, not CNN.
And I call it "naked aggression" ... not "pre-emptive strikes".
But I can still proudly support my nation's armed forces.
I believe in peacekeeping not policing;
Freedom over security;
And that the wild turkey is a far nobler bird than a bald carrion eater!
A treaty is something you keep,
Wars are fought among people, not abstractions.
And they are French fries, not freedom fries-- French fries!
America is the land of the free,
The home of the best game in the world, baseball,
And the greatest nation on Earth!

I am an American,
and I am ashamed for my country,
not ashamed of my country.

. . . any of you Canadians willing to help me move north?

Happy Independence Day, fellow Merkins. I'm off to re-read the Declaration, and ponder King George.

Well, there's a spare room downstairs (back in London), but I think Woap's got first claim on it.

Excellent. \m/ and ditto on all counts except baseball and not watching Crossfire (on CNN), if only for entertainment purposes (on both counts, because baseball isn't all that entertaining).

*would adore Simon/Christ except that:
Saul/Samuel is my OTP; and
John was "the beloved disciple", not Simon Peter; unless

(The Bible was my first slash fandom. No, really. I was shipping Saul/Samuel before I even took first communion.)

Oh no, not Simon PETER. Simon the Cyrenian. You know, the one who doesn't even appear in John because the beloved disciple was so angry that Jesus's last partner was Simon that he was written out. Not so much because it's really my OTP, but because I am terribly amused by cross-sex.

Oh, *that* Simon. How could I have been so silly!

Sorry, but ever since Something Positive (http://www.somethingpositive.net) granted me the image of Mary Magdalene pole-dancing around the cross, my imaginings of cross-sex have all been unabashedly het.

Yes, what with the cross and all. Shame on you for not recognizing someone who isn't refered to in more than one line in each gospel except for John where he doesn't even exist. Next thing you know you'll forget Simon the leper (okay, I really just did a bible search for "simon" to confirm that Simon of Cyrene appeared in ALL the non-John gospels and Simon the leper popped up, no one remembers Simon the leper).

Yay! Something Positive! I need to start reading that again (haven't since march). *puts on list*

. . . really, it's just that the last thing I read on the guy who carried the Cross was trying to make the point that he was actually the Wandering Jew.

Lepers are cool. We need more lepers, just in general.

Then again, quick google search on the Cyrenian brings me this sentence:

The probability would seem to be, that he was at least disposed to favour Christ, and that this his disposition was matter of notoriety‹nothing is more likely than that it was on account of his attachment to Jesus, and for the sake therefore of exposing him to public ridicule, that the soldiers compelled him to carry the cross.)

I'm converted.

My favorite leper is Koolau the Leper (http://www.online-literature.com/london/72/), the most badass leper ever, from the great Jack London short story by the same name.

CNN gives me a headache. Baseball is *relaxing*, which is what's important in a sport, right?

. . . right.

[identity profile] tabellae.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto on everything, including baseball. Which team do you support?

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The Baltimore Orioles! The Chudley Cannons of the American League!

I still have my orange-and-black "Cross your fingers and hope"-- erm, that is, "A Fan for *All* Seasons" hat from 15 years ago, when they went 1-21.

Re:

[identity profile] tabellae.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, well, I like the Orioles well enough. Since they're the closest to where I live right now, I root for them... when the Yankees aren't in town.

Yes. I am a Yankees fan born and raised.

*hides*

Well, as the Yankees were the Orioles before New YOrk stole our team . . .
^_^

*g* That happened a bit too long ago to have a grudge, don't you think? (Now, I'd be much more angry if I was from Brooklyn, thinking about LA.)

[identity profile] zodiaccat.livejournal.com 2003-07-05 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, I just like the fact that they came from out of nowhere to beat the Toronto Blue Jays today!

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, southern BC has the best climate, if you want to move up here ;)

That is a wickedly clever takeoff, all sentiment aside. Sentiment included, Canadians at least know all Americans aren't like the American government. I would even venture a guess that lots of us would choose to be American if we couldn't be Canadians, eh?

I take issue with the baseball is the greatest game part, though. There is hockey and there is only hockey.
ext_193: (Default)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I am not in general a sports fan. I like to go to a game where you can be reading a novel, or doing tarot readings, or having cotton candy fights, and only look at the field every ten minutes or so, and *not actually have missed anything*.

... this doesn't work for hockey.

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha, now that is a consideration.

Have you tried curling as a spectator sport?
ext_193: (Default)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-07-05 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
SAdly, you don''t see much curling in Maryland. The few times I've caught it on ESPN3 it looked interesting, though.
