That seems to be a suprisingly common answer. (I was licky enough to have an older sister who tested it first, so I didn't come back to it until later. Also, if people who have no patience for LotR, they probably won;t appreciate Watership Down either.

Although really, I didn't find the book that much scarier than the Rats of NIMH series, which were intended as kids' books!
