You got me curious and I looked up the FAQ for it. I don't see anything about it on the changes blog so I guess it was there from the beginning and most of us just never noticed?

I wonder if a lot of people using it are from the post-HTML generation and think turning it off makes it impossible to link their fic (since they wouldn't know how.)
