OH yeah. Which prompted a bunch of people I know to lock older entries and add "Do not copy and paste posts from this blog and post on Fanlore" type requests to their blogs. I don't think that's the effect you were after, Fanlore!

The argument there is, "but if you link to it, the site could go away or the writer could lock or delete their post and then we would lose Precious Fannish History." Well yeah, but pre-emptively copying and pasting the bulk of old personal entries that were often meant for a much different audience and creating a wayback archive "just in case" seems beyond the pale to me. And good luck to you if you lock or even delete the post and Fanlore already grabbed it, they'll just post large chunks of it anyway.

I think one thing that's intriguing to me about this post is [personal profile] melannen is thinking not only about fandom mores but that's also really different from the typical internet "Wild West" argument (hah) of "You shouldn't ever post anything you don't want to see on the front page of the NYT, even locked." That approach is based on whatever you do other than posting the fic or essay or personal rant or what have you, it's out of your control. But the idea that you shouldn't even rec a fic locked to an archive is like the polar opposite of that, so it's interesting to chew on.
