podcast wrapped

I don't know how to do normal DW posts anymore. :(

Everyone is posting their Spotify Wrapped, but mine is useless. Partly because I usually only use Spotify when playing with fanmixes, which means a lot of my frequently-played are like, this one obscure electronica song that happens to have a relevant title that I kept trying to listen to see if it would really fit and then getting distracted and having to start over.

Mostly though because my Spotify stats are always full of songs I've never listened to and never heard of. I think at some point my Spotify got on a list of mostly-inactive spotify accounts that could be hacked to fake plays of songs for money, and multiple password changes and/or the hackers getting smarter got to where it isn't showing up in my playlists or recently played anymore, but it still shows up in my end-of-year stats.

So basically don't trust any playback stats on Spotify, the really popular stuff is probably mostly bots.

BUT!

Podcast addict has stats now! So I can do a podcast wrapped! Also I recently got my podcasts back to being sequential, as below:
podcast addict screenshot showing podcasts with unlistened episodes that count up from one to fifteen

The podcasts on that there are still mostly the same as the last time I got there, but the order is pretty different! (I hid the thing that says I'm subscribed to 76 podcasts, 44 with unlistened episodes.)

They aren't necessarily the ones I listen to most - you can see some of them are in fact at the exact same episode count as last time- but lucky Podcast Addict can tell me how many I've listened to!

In the last year I have listened to 716 hours of podcasts and 724 episodes, or an average of about two hours and two episodes a day. On track to match last year's totals by the end of December, which is interesting because I didn't have two months off work doing nothing but listening to podcasts and reading fanfic this year!

  1. Well There's Your Problem: engineering disasters, bad ideas, and democratic socialism.
    117 hours
This is one I just started this year and put in serious time catching up with the backlist, thus the high number!

  2. Palaeo After Dark: Three professors of paleontology read recent papers in the field, drink alcohol, discuss cats and anime.
    65 hours
This one recently dumped all their early episodes back into the feed, which hadn't been up when I started listening, so I started over from the beginning. I have finally solved the mystery of the time-travelling Germans!

  3. Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men:Jay and Miles explain the X-Men, sometimes other things.
    54 hours
This has been my backup bedtime podcast. No promises how much of it I was actually awake for.

  4. Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad: Solving unsolved murders with the power of podcasts and forensics.
    46 hours
This one isn't actually one of my favorites - I'm more into unsolved mysteries than pure true crime - so I was kind of surprised to see it here, but it comes out every Monday morning and is just the right level of background noise to put on as I do boring stuff at work on Mondays, and I am mostly uninvested in it so I'll put it on even if I'm not in the mood. So I've stayed caught up, and I guess that is exactly one episode slightly-under-an-hour episode, two weeks.

  5. The Shocking Details: Strange mysteries, weird histories
    46 hours
Another bedtime podcast that I've stayed caught up with on an every-two-weeks schedule. This is one of the heirs of Thinking Sideways, and does a similar skeptically-slanted unserious take on Weird Shit-Ology

  6. Oh No, Ross And Carrie: They actually try out all the scams, cults, and woo and give them a fair shake, and report back to you!
    43 hours
Another good go-to-sleep podcast, and they tend to have long episodes that are part of even longer "investigations" - this is probably just three or four investigations' worth.

  7. In Research Of: A paleontologist and a professional skeptic re-watch the classic "In Search Of" series, do the background research to fill in what the show doesn't, and also report on Leonard Nimoy's fashion journey.
    36 hours
Another one I'm all caught up on and would have listened to more if if there was more.

  8. My Favorite Murder: Two California girls talk crime.
    34 hours
Another one that's good for background noise at work, plus they put out so much content that I know I can always just grab one if I need something.

  10. Skeptics with a K: some members of a UK skeptics' polycule discuss current topics - usually leaning toward medical, paranormal and political stuff- from a skeptical and scientific point of view. Recently diagnosed as majority ASD!
    24 hours
I stay a little behind on this one so there's always at least one episode to listen to in an emergency when I really need something guaranteed safe to take me out of my head.

Podcast Addict will also tell you your cumulative stats. These are either the numbers since I got this phone at the beginning of last year, or it only started keeping stats in 2020, I don't remember if it carried over.

Anyway, since I basically listen only to nonfiction podcasts, I though it would be fun to do it as credit-hours. So in the last two years my podcasts cover:

21 credit-hours in Weird Shitology
15 credit-hours in Skepticism and Philosophy of Science
15 credit-hours in True Crime
12 credit-hours in Virology and Epidemiology
12 credit-hours in Engineering and Disaster Management
6 credit-hours in Sequential Art And Storytelling
6 in Evolutionary Biology, Herpetology, Botany and Ecology
6 credit-hours in Paleontology
3 credit-hours in Astronomy
3 credit-hours in Medieval Icelandic Literature
2 credit-hours in Death Studies
1 credit-hour in History
1 credit-hour in Language and Linguistics
.75 in Mathematical Curiosities
.75 in Polyamory
.5 in Vulcanology

Plus various others that clock in at less than six hours each.

That's, uh. That's very close to a bachelor's degree. I'm not sure what my major would be, but it *is* probably the same major I'd have ended up with if allowed to freely design my own courseload in undergrad...

Oops that kind of ended up being a recs post anyway, didn't it.

I was going to work on an AO3 wrapup too, but the site that lets you download your AO3 history seems to have just gone down. :( Hopefully it's just for a revamp for the new year.

Anyway, in terms of wrapups for the 100 days of enemies stuff, I keep adding on the list of stuff I want to do instead of doing it? So, soon.

I've been using stitcher but it doesn't always update reliably so you've inspired me to start fresh on Podcast addict with the (14 turns out) shows that i listen to more or less regularly (though that's counting the "Bad Blood" podcast which is going to wrap up whenever the verdict on the Elizabeth Holmes trial comes in, so I guess I have to invite another one to the table after that so I don't end up with 13 party guests !)

I love the credit-hours twist.

I have finally solved the mystery of the time-travelling Germans is very intriguing -- is this Die Gloke?

I'd name your major /digs deep into new-Greek dictionary/ Cacallokotos

Wow.

I respect the idea of time-traveling scientists who don't abuse their fuller knowledge by betting on the horses.

You appear to have listed "In Research Of" twice, btw!
