jabs and stats
Had my second pfizer Covid jab yesterday! And then spent about twelve hours with a 100+ deg temperature and a migraine, starting the middle of last night, including a short stretch of chills so bad I couldn't maneuver the blankets for the shaking. So that was fun. Luckily my work is encouraging everyone to preemptively schedule a recovery day after their second shot, and I am very glad I took it. I am thinking about how much it must suck to have that happen if you can't just take a sick day after - and how that must be really screwing up vaccine takeup in some demographics. But also how nice it was to be able to schedule my annual bout of flu symptoms a month in advance. Anyway, temp is now several degrees lower, headache is mostly gone, and brain and appetite are back, so hopefully I'll be all done by 36 hours after the shot, like most people I've heard from. I think I am still taking another dose of Tylenol before bed just in case though.
Anyway, other news: anybody remember how back at the beginning of the year, I was trying to write a tool that would let you run stats on your AO3 history, and failed because I don't actually understand how login cookies work? Someone else has built one! AO3 Year In Review
It has mostly told me that I have read a LOT of MDZS fic in the last eighteen months, which I probably didn't need a spreadsheet to figure out, but it's still fun to play with. Also it did tell me I read 32,581,788 words of fanfic in 2020, so that's, uh, about 400 more books that would go on my reading tracking for the year, if they were all actual novels, so that's, uh, a thing. 1977 individual fics, average length 16500 words, median 5780. 53 of them were over 100,000 words, and the longest was "Embers" at 704200 (I save that one for emergencies.)
It's not totally accurate because your history only records works you visit while logged in, and only counts the most recent re-read, and it also records all works you open whether you actually read them or not (I think at least one of the 100000+ works I did not read, or if I did I preserved no memory of it whatsoever.) Those probably cancel out more or less in the overall numbers because I read logged out a lot, but 2021 stats so far are probably particularly inflated by this, because I've been going back looking at fic I've read in the past to decide what I want to download for forever, so there's a lot I've opened but not read.
Also it doesn't understand tag wrangling, so if you want true numbers for things like fandoms and ships, you have to do your own wrangling in the spreadsheet, and I have not had the energy to do that right, but I am probably going to keep poking at it!
Other than that, for the past few weeks I have mostly been staring at video of the new volcano in Iceland! What a nice little volcano it is.

That stats tool is so cool, thanks for linking. And uh. In 2020 I managed 56 million words. That's uh. Sure a lot. I knew that I spend a lot of time reading fanfic but I didn't realize HOW MUCH, dear lord. So far this year I appear to be at 16 million, so I'm on track to do the same again.

betterworsebetter than me! (Of course I do a lot of logged-out reading, so I might be close to that with an accurate count...)I also am on track to do the same for this year, which is interesting given that this time last year I'd already spent a month locked in at home off work...

(I've preemptively scheduled a day off, yes).

The same person pointed out that it's a lot more tolerable when you know exactly what's causing it and that it's good for you, and that was at least partly true!

Glad you're feeling better!
