Oops, I didn't post yesterday.

Yesterday I bought a new phone and a new laptop, and it was awful, shopping for things you actually need right now is the worst, but I have them now. The phone is called 玄女 and the laptop is called 女媧, in my long-standing tradition of naming electronics after female deities/etc. from whatever mythology I'm currently into. Then I crocheted a little, read my library book, and took a long nap.

The phone is pretty much what I wanted, I think, except that I had to get a data plan, and it's not as waterproof as my last one. I think I'm going to try to keep it as just my phone and keep using the old one as my pocket computer since it still works mostly fine for that.
The laptop I am less sure of - why is it darn near impossible to buy a laptop with a disk drive anymore??

Between post-nap yesterday and this morning I think I have the phone all set up, except for getting it a protective case. (I can play pokemon go again!) and today I need to tackle the laptop, and this giant pile of half-broken backup hard drives while I'm at it. Ugh.

Somebody on my reading list a week or so back linked to a neat tool for finding duplicate files, and I could swear I saved it but I can't find it now - does anybody still have it? It will be very useful for the pile of hard drives.

shopping for things you actually need right now is the worst Oh man, it's true. I'm going to need a new laptop soon, but not actually immediately, so thinking about the prospect is kind of fun. Buuuut actually going and trying to find something that I want and can afford? nahhhh.

I'm pretty much decided that my next laptop will be something inexpensive-but-not-too-cheap that I can install Linux Mint or Ubuntu on. I did have a job that required I have microsoft office on my personal computer, but that just finished, so YAY, no more microsoft for me. (Disentangling myself from Mac software might prove more difficult.)

I was going to say: I have a pretty good 'duplicate file-finder' for linux! But that may not help, depending on which system you are trying to deduplicate.

Congrats on acquiring new tech amidst a blizzard of overstated promises and doesn't-really-matter choices. Laptop weight is a major selling point and stand-alone disk drives are wicked cheap.

If you find the info on the duplicate fill finder, please share. For similar reasons I could really use something that works well enough that I'm confident to start deleting duplicates of duplicates of ...

I thought I had a duplicate file finder, but I was thinking of WizTree - which is a useful piece of software for finding LARGE files, but not actually a duplicate finder. :/ Let me know if you hit on a good one, it looks like there are a ton of options.

Oh, wait, cccleaner comes with a duplicate finder. that's probably what I'm thinking of. I haven't used it recently though. But I do recommend cccleaner for keeping your hard drive free of random kludge, especially once your hard drive gets down to its last 50 or so free gigs ...
