AO3 got the Hugo Nomination! *\o/* *\o/* *\o/*

Thank you to everybody who listened to my lobbying! :D

Honestly it's a really good ballot in general this year (longtime DW blogger [personal profile] james_davis_nicoll is also up for a fan nomination, and there's lots of other great stuff) and I would be happy if nearly anyone won!

Also I kinda want to start crowdfunding to, like, send all of AD&T to Dublin! It's probably a terrible idea though.

I saw that! I am so happy. But also torn, because there is such a great ballot. I mean, several of those other related works will only be eligible for a Hugo this year, whereas the AO3 will be eligible every year enough people nominate it to get on the ballot.

Speaking of, why is Ao3 eligible every year?

It's continually being updated and revised, both because the software requires constant maintenance and new features are being developed, and its userbase is always producing more fanfic. Where, for example. Lindsay Ellis's three-part duology about The Hobbit is finished, done, and will never be eligible again.

That's an interesting point, but also... won't that be true every year? Perpetually eligible isn't that helpful if people take that as a reason not to vote for it.

Or if it wins every years, like the Hugo Award For Being Girl Genius that we had for a few years.

Because it's not static.

A book, once published, is relatively unchanging. Next year, it's still the same book. So it's only eligible the year it comes out.

Magazines and archives change, however. Not only are the stories on the archive constantly being updated and increased in number, but the code the archive runs on is being regularly updated and enhanced and improved. It's not static, it's constantly being improved. So it's not the same as it was last year.

That makes sense I suppose, even if it does feel a bit odd to have things that are continuously eligible facing against things that are not. It somehow seems unfair to both parties

True. On the other hand, how many things are there that would be eligible every year? Besides the archive, magazines and television shows, mainly, and damn few of them fit into the category of "related work" which is the only one the archive could fit in. (It is not, in itself, a work of science fiction or fantasy; it supports works of science fiction and fantasy, among other types of works.)

Congrats to OTW and the AO3 staff!

I never expected collection of fics that struck me as sfnal to be relevant to anyone else. I just made it as a way to kept track of fic, since I do love SF and sometimes miss it since my reading has mostly switched to fic. Would it be worth pointing the collection out to OTW? It might be a good place to start looking for fics to put in the voter packet (if the authors agree, of course).

Though it’s probably a bad idea to point general voters to the collection directly. Maybe a recs post on my blog?
