todo list blogging - where were we?

I spent most of today cleaning up the messes I made while doing the other cleaning.

wooo

(I think I am mostly on track for my to-do goals, but. ooof.)

when does the actual relaxing and working on crafts part start? <_<

Anyway, [profile] friday_five this week is all things I have strong opinions on, and I have been getting my autumnal walks in every day, so here:

The Friday Five for October 19, 2018

To me, more than pumpkin spice, autumn means apples.

1. Have you ever bobbed for Apples?
Everyone had braces when we were the prime age to bob for apples, so maybe once or twice? Not very successfully.

I have bobbed for bottles of hard cider though.

2. Do you like a regular or hard apple cider?

Regular, but only the real kind, not the kind they sell in supermarkets (the way you tell is that if you can see light through it, it's basically just apple juice. The real kind is opaque and tastes chewy.)

I have once or twice tasted bottled hard cider that tasted like the real stuff, and that's one of the few alcohols I actively like, but most of it's just apple juice that's gone off.

3. Do you have a special type of apple that you prefer over others?

I like ones that are crisp and just a little bit tart, but my experience has been that one year's really good apple variety in the stores will be two year's from nows horrible mealy disappointment. But what I've discovered is that the most terrible, card-boardy Red Delicious becomes absolutely amazingly flavorful if cut into thin slices and dried, so now I just dry them if they're disappointing.

4. Have you ever made baked apples?

Yes! In tinfoil with butter and cinnamon in a campfire on the beach is the best way. Although maybe those are technically roasted rather than baked? Not sure. Apple dumplings and apple fritters are also the best.

5. Who is the apple of your eye?

...yeah I'm going to go with all the other people who said cats.

The one thing I really miss from living in central PA is how easy it was to get real apple cider in the fall.

When I lived in Gettysburg, not only was there a stand that opened up in the seminary (one of the professors made it), all you had to do was go driving down the back roads and you'd find all these little roadside stands.

That stuff is SO GOOD, HOLY COW.

there is nothing better that true apple cider - that spiced apple juice just isn't the same, though it's passable if you heat it up

and if the apple orchard here wasn't like 2hrs away, i'd wander over there to see what they have. if i was planning to visit my parents before december, i'd have 'em roll me out to the orchard out where they live.

Yes - that's what it always feels like!

My local grocery store carries an apple cider - the good stuff, but it's pricey. =(

And clear evidence that tastes change over time - as a kid I hated cider and preferred juice. Now? Other way 'round. XD

Apparently I have regional cider-related privilege, which I never realized before, because in my neck of the woods you can absolutely buy proper opaque apple cider at supermarkets. I'm sorry it's harder for you to get your hands on!
