I watched the Star War finally!

It was everything I could have hoped it would be! SO BEAUTIFUL SO PERFECT

I went in mostly unspoiled, and I'm not actually sure if it was worth it or not, because they kept going for the thing I REALLY HOPED THEY WOULDN'T DO (Poe's rogueish heroism totally outshines the mature, femme woman who needs to be shown her place except NO; Rey and Kylo have a special bond except NO; Rey's parentage is super important except NO; Kylo gets redeemed except NO.) and then swerving at the very last second.

It's like someone found my secret list of stuff I really hoped the movie wouldn't do even though TFA was telegraphing them, and then made a movie that not only didn't do them, but ANTI-did them.

So great.

And it was honestly the first one I've seen since Dad rented ROTJ when I was 12 that really felt like getting a new Star Wars movie that was worth the name! Rogue One was great, but it was deliberately trying to be a different kind of movie that Star Wars movies are, and TFA was a pretty good remix of ANH, but TLJ took everything that was amazing in Star Wars, and then blew away the old that we don't need anymore and kept was was important and made all things new again.

So great, you guys, so great.

And I honestly never though I would care about Kylo Ren in any way whatsoever but. He. In this movie, he, like, actually LIVED UP TO HIS GRANDPA'S LEGACY??? Like, I feel like Force Ghost Anakin was spending the entire movie cheering him on for doing what he never quite had the courage to do while Obi-Wan repeatedly smacked him in the back of the head and said NO BAD ANI MURDERING HIM AND TAKING OVER IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CHEERING FOR.

(this is why they were too busy to go bug Luke with Yoda)

but seriously, is there anyone who didn't hope, at least a little bit, that Vader would do that the first time they watched TESB? 12-year-old me had an AMAZINGLY CATHARTIC MOMENT there. (I mean, it's not going to last because Kylo is super terrible at actually running anything - and we know from asshole Nazi sympathizers with zero leadership ability around here - but I'm sure it will be just as cathartic to watch Hux stab him in the back in the next movie.)

Also a+++ that they understood the fundamental fact that astromech droids secretly run the galaxy, yay.

Am kinda sad that there is no longer a place for BB-8 in Poe's sedoretu, but Rose is def. awesome enough and BB-8 has other stuff to do, and the bit where Rey looked at Poe for the first time and you could totally see her thinking "Yes. We're absolutely going to marry that man" was 100% worth it. (Am also delighted that, from what little I've poked around the response so far, everybody in fandom was already so entirely convinced that Finn is poly that nobody was upset about the onscreen kiss from a shipping POV, just happy for him getting another girlfriend.)

Only things I have to complain about are not enough Finn using the force, not enough Lando, not enough Chewie, not enough Mav, and not enough porgs.

I loved everything about The Last Jedi and it was wonderful how it subverted expectations at every turn. Terrific film.
