No but today I learned that when Breq decapitated that Itran saint, there was a delegation of weirdly pale-skinned travelling merchants watching from the audience. Methos would be so into that.

I don't remember that scene (was it in the first book? I haven't read beyond the first book (yet)) but yup that sounds plausibly Methos

It was in the short story that takes place during Breq's time in the Itran Tetrarchy (which is available free online and doesn't spoil anything past the first book, if you want to read it: She Commands Me And I Obey). I don't think Methos could be the merchant who actually has a speaking part in the story, not his style, but he could definitely be with the group.

I just. Want Breq to be minding her own business on a passenger ship somewhere, humming a very old song. And for this weird pale person to come up to her and start singing those lyrics, translated into Radchaai, which she didn't think anyone else remembered. And then for her to compliment Anaander Miaanaai on her attention span, "I only lasted about a millennium before I got bored enough with ruling the known universe to start an internal squabble just for the change. Although if my war machines had been as delightful and charming as you, I might never have been able to give it up; chariots just can't compare, my dear."

I could call the story "Poverty, War and Injustice" and then earworm myself whenever I went to my AO3 dash.

Who's Breq?

Lead character in the Imperial Radch books. Totally Methos's type. Only about 3,000 years old though, so she'd be an absolute baby compared to future-Methos.

Obviously I have to start reading those books. How many are there in the series?

It's a complete trilogy, only three! Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword, Ancillary Mercy. Plus that short-story I linked upthread. Obviously, I recommend them.
