I am backreading old fic in my tags (partly to procrastinate actually finishing any more, partly because I'm thinking about finally putting together an AO3 anthology of scraps too small to go anywhere else, partly because I am masochistically collecting old bunnies I could write the first 1700 words of if I make my October goal^**).

And I just want to say that if anybody felt like posting their translation of Oolon Colluphid was Right somewhere I could see it, it would make my weekend. ^_^

Yeah sadly *I* don't trust me to do it correctly (do you know how hard it is to find detailed sources on pre-WWII Harlem drag balls??? I descended to trying to find archives of historical black newspapers online, and couldn't even find any of those that were reasonably searchable. Not to mention modern ones.... you're one of a few people I know who actually might have tried to find them, come to think of it) but I did spend a very fun two weeks once coming up with designs for Tony's Mark 63 armor with the hoop skirt, spike heels and shoulder-length satin gloves.

(He left a gap between the gloves and the sleeves, so the current to power the repulsors in his palms actually flows over apparently-bare skin for about an inch, it looks really cool in the dark okay)

(...this is part of the reason I don't trust me to do it correctly)

Avengers Go To A Drag Ball sounds awesome. It should be a story, or at least some sketches or pinterest-y inspiration collages.

no, seriously, you'd be doing it a lot better than most! And I just know of the obvious resource (Gay New York, of course), but I'll see if I can find something better for you ...

...I may already have the skteches and inspiration folder. <_< And no, it was actually going to be a tragic love story about how Four-way Pallet and Standard Shipping Container changed the world together by fitting so well together, but now that newer, more efficient technologies are replacing the old wooden pallets, Shipping Container is leaving Pallet behind. (I think it had a bittersweet happy ending with Shipping Container becoming a house in post-capitalist-apocalypse Earth, and Four-way Pallet being remade into a dining-room table.) Mostly I want an excuse to tag something on AO3 with "Shipping - Fandom" and make all the other wranglers hate me. (also, shipping infrastructure is cool.)

Yeah, I have Gay New York, that's were I got the bunny from. ^_^ I should probably re-read the relevant bits, though, it's been awhile. iirc its coverage of drag balls was a) not as extensive as I'd like, and b) very much from a "this is how they intersected with white queer culture" perspective, which is probably because those were the sources *he* could find, so it's fair enough, but there were tantalizing hints of surviving coverage in black newspapers? Which I finally concluded I'd probably have to actually spend a day in a large newspaper archive to find :/

I think I did find some books that looked like they covered the postwar era (and I watched Paris is Burning obvs), but didn't manage to find anything for Steve's time in any detail, and SO MUCH changed after the war. This was one of those where I got partway into the fic and went 'fuck, I don't think anybody's actually *done* the research I need for this yet, to I want to effectively do a doctorate on this just so I can write superheroes in drag?' If you can find something (maybe there's more now! or I just failed at research!) that would be AMAZING. (but I still don't promise to write the fic :P)

(I started idly researching this before Cap 2. Before Avengers, actually... but in the post-Sam-Wilson-Is-The-Greatest era, I feel like it's even more important that I do the research on the Harlem end properly. I could probably manage the first 1700 words without that, though. I could probably do 1700 words on Tony realizing he has an excuse to build that armor. :P)

This one seems to me like it would be so fascinating, and fun, and also could only be written by someone who has done research into queer culture of the 30s and 40s, and there are very few people who have done sufficient research, so I will always want more fic from you as one of those people doing anything related to Steve and queer themes.

Oooh, if I did find that one before I wrote it off as "not a chance in hell I'll ever get my hands on it". (On the other hand it's possible it wasn't out the last time I was seriously researching this.... I will definitely put it on a list!)

Harry Sings the Blues is the result of me getting assigned the Chicago Blues Festival in a Dresden Files vs. Real Chicago fest that happened a couple years back, and I never wrote it because of a similar case of "damn it if I'm going to write about Chicago Blues I really need to do a better job on the research and non-whitewashing than Butcher ever did." Luckily that one *does* have the research material out there - it is in fact the main reason I now own all these books, and actually feel semi-qualified to offer Robert Johnson in YT this year - I just haven't, uh, read most of them.

(also haven't read the last two Dresden Files books. Actually. Possibly my planned story wouldn't even work any more. It had a lot of Lash in it. and required Harry being much more okay than he was at any point in Ghost Story.)

No, I am glad to hear! The drag ball one seems to be a hit. (I think people are vastly overestimating the amount of research I have at my fingertips there, though.)

I think Steve/Betty would be a little bit of bittersweet, a lot of trolling, with a garnish of Steve learning things about sex he didn't even know he didn't know. :P I mostly want Steve to date someone his own age, and I feel like Betty White would be up to it. She was a USO girl in Hollywood during the war, iirc, so they could have even known each other before! (There's actually a reference to it in my Bruce Banner fic, when they mention Steve's scary girlfriend it's hinted to be Betty, though it was a very subtle hint.)

and Ray is a Time Lord is just... really necessary, and works weirdly well, although there's some backstory stuff that takes explaining, although the car being a functioning TARDIS helps. (So does "Stella was married to Vecchio, okay, and we just didn't have chemistry anymore after I regenerated, and it SUCKS.")

Yes, but think about how some people get paid to spend FIVE YEARS doing that kind of research fulltime. :P

NO although you can tell me if I need to read Cold Days first or I can skip to the one that actually sounds kinda fun. :P

Eh, cold days is basically one of those 3-straight-days-of-ACTION!! stories. There's some good bits but you can probably skip it. Or just read it, it's not *bad* and it'll take you like 3 hours probably.

I wasn't a librarian in 2011 when I last attempted to write that story, okay.

And the county has statewide interlibrary loan among the public libraries, but if it's academic-y and Enoch Pratt doesn't circulate it, you're pretty much out of luck there. They do *do* ILL outside of the statewide system if you know to ask, but they keep it on the down-low and I didn't know it existed until I became a librarian. (And actually from the gossip, they've expanded that a lot in the last couple years, I think in 2011 it was a lot more limited in terms of what you could get.)

So I probably could get it now using my magic librarian powers. ^_^ Not to just write the first 1700 words though. (The first book I ever got through that system was the one on Magdalenian Europe for the Les Mis fic I still haven't written any of because I have at least three more relevant academic books I want to finish first....)

I heard some Cold Days spoilers that made me go seriously meh and was unimpressed by Ghost Story and I fell out of the fandom around then, but I saw the latest one come by the library and was actually like hey that looks like it might be back to some of the stuff that made me like it in the first place.

No, I think it's more a reflection of the pitiful amount of research (and aptitude for it) that 99.99% of other fic writers have access to.

I was thinking neither prequel nor original trilogy? Given that the movie is about people who were formerly an elite military unit transitioning into being a resistance force, I was going to set it in the very early Imperial years. (And ignore most of the post-Prequel-Trilogy EU because I don't care about it.) So Master Pentecost is leading a motley group of traumatized Force-sensitive survivors and Republic loyalists and trying to save what he can of the Jedi tradition without drawing Imperial notice. (I think there's a climactic moment where he says "Today, we stop clinging to the last excuses of the Old Republic. Today, we become the Rebellion.")

And yeah, it was going to be Dresden Files Erlking, the next one in the series of crossovers I plotted out (Fraser is chasing a poacher across Canada, and runs into a Hunt he didn't expect....)

And hanging out with Peter & Co was enough to let even Comics!Tony get over his angst enough to be cheerful for awhile, so I figured it might be worth trying with Dean. (I don't have enough recent SPN canon to do it properly though, so if someone else wanted to... )
