Today I found myself thinking "Man, this is getting annoying - coughing and sneezing more than usual, stuffy nose turning into post-nasal drip that's giving me a sore throat, and ears that don't *quite* hurt but feel like they're about to, plus I've been feeling like butter-over-too-much bread, like I need to get more sleep except I can't when I try, and my appetite is gone and my digestion's feeling picky - I hope I don't get sick."
And then I stopped and thought about that list of symptoms and went, wait, what more would I have to *get* to qualify as "sick"? Basically the only symptom left is a fever, and I almost never get fevers.
(The things is, it's all just right at the level where as long as I keep busy, I don't consciously notice it - but if I stop moving for a few minutes, I realize I'm miserable. And really it's all only maybe one tick above my usual level of "damn you physical body" anyway. So I'm actually maybe even getting more done than usual, because I don't want to stop moving long enough to notice that I feel bad. So I'm not *really* sick. Right? Right.)
...of course reading kaiju drift hangover fic whenever I can't sleep probably isn't helping the weird oogy feeling. :P
ANYWAY on to important things. Like Yuletide.
The extra two request slots are screwing me up! I have, I think, five requests I know I'm asking for (the four things I nominated: paleontology RPF, Bran/Tru, Arm Joe, Lovelace and Babbage + Lucky Starr) but that leaves one slot open, and I have to *decide*! Augh.

1. I can acquire canon relatively easily, and
2. review it relatively quickly;
3. it doesn't have an active fandom of any kind I'd feel like I had to familiarize myself with;
4. either I know the fandom and have been wanting to write fic for it already, or
5. it's been on my to-read/to watch list for too long, or
6. just seeing the fandom name on the list made me long to write for it;
7. I can't imagine any prompts for it that I would actively not want to work with;
8. if it will probably result in a match with someone I know, I've read their YT letters and know I can write what they want; and
9. I have not yet written or received it for yuletide.
Which is why some fandoms you might expect aren't on there and some you might not expect are.
I basically just let Yuletide pick my November/December fandom for me at random. It's the best part of the season!)

SOMETHING THAT FOLLOWS THE EMPRESS THROUGH THE NEXT TEN YEARS OF HER REIGN
AT LEAST 200000 WORDS PLEASE
ALSO FFAIRL AND ARRHAE SHOULD HAVE BABIES
AWKWARD HALF-ARRANGED WEDDING WHERE ONE OR THE OTHER IS SUSPECTED OF NOT BEING RIHANNSU AND THEY PROVE IT BY MARRYING AND BEING CROSS-FERTILE
BECAUSE AFTER ALL *BOTH* OF THE EMPRESS'S TOP ADVISORS CAN'T SECRETLY BE HUMAN THAT'S ONE COINCIDENCE TOO MUCH
AND THEN THEY FALL IN LOVE
AMONG COMPLICATED RIHANNSU POLITICS
WHICH ARE VERY PLOTTY AND FULL OF ROMAN PARALLELS
AND INVOLVE AEL BEING AWESOME
AND NOT SLEEPING WITH KIRK EVEN THOUGH EVERYBODY IS WAITING FOR IT
MCCOY AND H'DAEN ARE THE GODPARENTS
(OF BOTH THE BABIES AND THE NEW EMPIRE)
THEY EMBARRASS EVERYONE BY FLIRTING CONSTANTLY
SPOCK IS JEALOUS
...yeah I dunno about writing a yuletide letter for that one. :P
(or FW crossover but can't ask for only crossovers...)

(You would think Ffairl and Arrhae having human children would give the game away, though...)
Ha, I mentioned Frontier Rihannsu. You might match me! *cackles, rubs hands together gleefully*
no subject
...if I match you you might actually get Frontier Rihannsu at long last.
And honestly Ffairl and Arrhae don't really make sense in general. Like, at all, politically or tactically or biologically. But I LOVE THEM ANYWAY. If they can somehow give them green blood that stays green for years and causes no immune reactions and also increase their body temperature a little bit and change their digestive chemistry enough to manage the diet, they can have green-blooded babies. :P
(...also I hope you didn't get the idea that that was anything other than unmediated idfic. :P)

Re: requests. I love Casablanca, and there has been some exceptionally fine Casablanca fic written for Yuletide over the years. But oddly enough, that would (for me) argue against requesting Casablanca. First, because it's a movie everybody knows, so therefore even someone who doesn't match on it will probably know it (or be able to get ahold of it easily) and may choose to write it as easier than one of your other choices even if that other choice is what you matched on. (I have felt similar temptations in the past, where I was stretching myself in the offers but wasn't sure if I had stretched myself too far when I got my assignment.) Second, the high quality of Yuletide stories in the past would be a hindrance to me. Is this new story going to be just rehashing what they have already done so well, or is it going to be covering new ground? I guess it depends on what characters you select and what optional details.
I think the most critical thing you have to consider before requesting any fandom for your sixth slot is, "If I get a fic in this fandom, will I be disappointed that it wasn't in one of the other fandoms I requested?"
no subject
Yeah, I know a lot of people worry about that, but that's never been an issue for me. I think I suffer from an excess of enthusiasm or something, I am really equally delighted when people write me fic, no matter what fandom it is. :P So for me this is really more about coming up with fandoms where I could easily come up with good yuletide prompts that I really want than about the fandoms per se?
With Casablanca it would be Ilsa/Laszlo/Rick, which, much to my very great shock, nobody has ever written that I can find, despite the fact that there was a scene in the movie where Ilsa was clearly about two seconds away from suggesting they solve everything with a threesome, and everybody in that movie having scorching chemistry with everything in sight. So it wouldn't be a rehashing. (I'd put in "anything about Sam" as my non-pairing-specific backup request - Sam fic has been written before for yuletide, and very very well, but I don't actually believe there can be too much of it. :P)

(note that this is happening the same night that Lazslo basically gave her tacit permission to sleep with Rick if she thought it best)
That's when Rick says his "Here's looking at you, kid" line. But every time I watch the movie, I expect either Ilsa to follow that train of thought a tiny bit farther before she gives up. Or Rick to think past his own sads far enough to realize where she was trying to lead him. And then am very sad when that doesn't happen.
And then the next scene is Rick inviting *Laszlo* in and testing him out to see if he's really good enough for Ilsa, and instead Laszlo offers to step back and let Rick have her. And I keep expecting, okay, in the last scene Rick wasn't sure about Laszlo, so he deflected, but now he's decided that yes, this could work, and he's going to go in for the OT3.
But alas still no.
I mean, I love the canon ending with Rick and Renault going off into the sunset together, but every time I watch the movie I still want the ending where Renault hands Rick a third set of papers and shoos him onto the plane with them :P
