Writing year in review

Behind the cut, there are wordles for all the fic I have added more than 700 words to over the course of the past year.

Finished stories have white backgrounds; WIPs are in black. The number of words in the cloud is approx. 1% of the number of words currently in the file. Stories that are posted in any form somewhere online are hyperlinked to the place where they're posted. If you want to see it bigger, just right click+open. None of the linked stories required any of AO3's archive warnings except "character death (in canon)", but beyond that you're on your own. :P

I am, as always, happy to babble at length about any of them, given any excuse. Also other people should do this with their stories, because it's fun! And shiny!

I am really excited about the whatever life Stark / seriously okay / crotch kick story.

I have only written the Darcy POV part of that story so far - the rest of it I suspect will slightly lower on the "okay seriously Stark" and the crotch kicking, at least until I get to the Natasha POV. :P Also can I say I am quite proud of my readers for keeping that one consistently in first place on the poll from a few weeks back. It made me even more scared that it won't be good enough, though. "The Avengers have a very special episode about rape culture", as much as they need it, is a story that could go wrong so many, many ways.

Nice work on the text colours in the Kanaya & Terezi one. *g* What's that one about?

It's actually Kanaya/Terezi/Rose, but it's Rose POV second-person so Rose didn't show up in the frequency cloud. Seven thousand words and counting of xeno menstruation kink! In which the trolls discover the existence of human female reproductive slurry, a cup is not quite the same thing as a bucket, and one of the ablution blocks on the meteor ends up splashed all over with jade, teal and scarlet.

I keep writing a few hundred more words of it and then getting too embarrassed to keep going. :D

That's the one where the Vor are all human-Lovecraftian hybrids. :P I was avoiding saying the word "tentacles" outright though, so there aren't any giveaways in the cloud.

Wordle automatically removes "Common" words from the cloud, and then you can go in and remove words you don't want to be in the cloud, too. One thing I discovered doing these is that my fiction has a lot of common words that aren't in their list. Like "come" and "going" and "think" and "know" and "actually" and "something" and "look" and "face" and "hand". I went through and took them out, unless they seemed particularly on-theme to the story, and, well, hands and the things one might have instead are pretty important to that story! So far all the tentacular handjobs are implied rather than explicit though, I'm going for the it's-scarier-if-it's-offscreen strategy.

I'm torn between "yeah, I can imagine" and "I can't even imagine".

(Considering my thesis of Ivan is "he's the most advantageously privileged preson in the books, because he has max privilege and min responsibility", adding tentacles JUST MAKES IT WORSE.)

Really, a lot of what is making this story work is strategically replacing "privilege" with "eldritch tentacles", and seeing what that changes... The answer is "not as much as you might think," right down to "Miles can deal with his congenital disabilities better than most Barrayarans would, because he also has Vor privilege tentacles."
