Holmes/Watson Recs Post for [personal profile] lindentreeisle (and anybody else who wants them)

Very belated, I know. Sorry. :/

Also, I realized while working on this that I need to add another 'ship to my list of man/vehicle pairings: Holmes/Violin. (And yes, with Holmes the violin is very much a vehicle.) That explains why my absolute Holmesverse OT-whatever involves Madelyn making a recording of Irene and Sherlock performing Erbarme Dich ...dude, I just realized: Irene, Holmes and Madelyn together make an MC, DJ, and producer! Chap-Hop battle with the Napoleon of Crime necessary, y/y/mfy?

...anyway, on with the recs:

Holmes bookverse:

1. Everything ever posted by [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe. She writes novel-length Holmes/Watson that's heavy on canon references, but you should be fine following along even if you aren't really up on canon (I wasn't, when I first found it.) Use the guide post on her lj sticky-post to figure out reading order; I would single out stories to start with, but they're all good.

2. One Week, by [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne, in which there is a challenge to go without sex for an entire week, a challenge which is not won. Has one of the best Holmes/Watson/Music sex scenes ever, plus just general novel-length drawing out delicious, deliberate, creative, and downright cruel sexual tension.

Also cowritten by [personal profile] janeturenne, along with [livejournal.com profile] rabidsamfan, Matches, or a treatise upon the education of a young gentleman, in which a very young Holmes decides to go into London to lose his virginity and meets a gorgeous and experienced Army doctor just about to leave for Afghanistan - but more than willing to help him out first.

You can then read the rest of Jane's Holmes slash, organized by length, although I should warn for occasional unfinished WIPs in there.

3. Homo Ex Machina by Toft, the 14,000 words not-actually-an-AU-bizarrely fic in which Watson secretly writes gay porn and Holmes secretly designs sex toys. IT IS AMAZING. (NC-17 and kink involving steampunk sex toys, obvs.)

[personal profile] toft wrote a whole collection of kinky Holmes/Watson bookverse stuff in the lead-up to the RDJ movie coming out, in order to "prepare" Holmes bookverse fandom for things to come. ...it was a grand, if ultimately futile, effort. The rest of them are best accessed through the Sherlock Holmes section of her fic index post. They are all good but I particularly enjoyed Service, a short one about uniform kink.

4. If you enjoyed those, the Holmes/Watson recs list at liquidfic.org is still the place for all the best bookverse Holmes/Watson.

Holmes movieverse

These are a bit more scattered? Not so much a comprehensive list of the best, as just ones that stuck in my mind for some reason. :P

Two pre-Sherlock modern-day AUs of love: As Seen On Urban Dictionary, in which, instead of doing cocaine, Holmes occupies his mind by trolling Fandom Wank. It is brilliant and astonishingly in-character and cracky as all-get out.

In a completely different mode, It's Nice To Know You Work Alone, novel-length AU in which Holmes is a detective for the Chicago PD, Watson is a coroner, there is a serial killer on the loose, and everybody is severely fucked up.

Ones that involve Mary Morstan a lot (for some reason, most of my movieverse bookmarks fit this category; check my previous fandom:holmes posts for more recs in that vein, but these are new ones ^_^): Marriage a Trois by [personal profile] sorrel, in which Mary and Watson basically trick Holmes, over the course of several months, into a committed threesome;

His Majesty's Aery, by [personal profile] starlady: Novel-length steampunk AU! With airships! And Lady Lovelace! And slash and awesome women being awesome and things!

Kinky movieverse fic: [personal profile] damned_colonial's Hypothesis series of shorts for kink-bingo, in which Sherlock sets the whole weight of his deductive and observational abilities on what turns John on. And John gets very turned on. The rest of Skud's Holmesfic is also kinky and brilliant.

LONG AND FILTHY WATSON GANGBANG PORN from the [livejournal.com profile] sherlockkink movieverse kinkmeme. Holmes and Watson get thrown in the prison yard again. Holmes happens to know some of the thugs already there. Holmes happens to know that Watson has a long-running gang bang fantasy. This being Holmes, somehow it actually works, prison-yard gangbang as RACK D/s, idek but it does work. Check out the rest of that kinkmeme, too - if you are enjoyng the sherlockbbc one, the movieverse one probably also has items to your liking. :D

Other Holmes and other Watsons

A Study In Emerald by Neil Gaiman is the Holmes/Lovecraft crossover canon. A Study in Emerald is available in PDF on Gaiman's website. Read it, then read The Terror From Bohemia, and the rest of the Study in Emeral fics on AO3.

(...okay. Dammit. I have been looking for this and looking for it. ) Missing fic found! And massively spoilery storyfinder-style summary edited out: A Study in Midnight by [livejournal.com profile] sound_of_bells, 41,000 words of exquisitely craften Holmesian madness which traces Holmes and Watson of Study in Emerald from the very beginning of their association, through assassinations and revolutions and betrayals and secrets and death, all the way to something that might, one day, become a functioning happy-ever-after; with star turns by Moriarty and Moran and Irene and various others along the way.

This was written for the [livejournal.com profile] holmes_big_bang challenge last summer; I have not read them all to be able to make a blanket rec, but from what I recall they had a fairly good average quality, so if you're absolutely jonesing for longfic that is another place to try!

/end edit

Sherlock BBC: [personal profile] lindentreeisle I think has read most of these already, but here's the one where Sherlock rapes John for science. (MASSIVE WARNINGS FOR REALISTIC NON-CON AND 1ST PERSON POV SOCIOPATHY.)

...if there were any others I mentioned that I have forgotten, remind me and I'll try to find them?

Yays!

Incidentally, I found Homo Ex Machina the other day and it was BRILLIANT. I also hunted down the Study in Emerald stuff.

You didn't just imagine that other Emerald fic, because I remember reading it too. I'm looking for it.

If I hadn't already read that noncon bbc fic the other week, I would hate you so much right now. As it is, I just hate myself for reading it. It ruined my whole day.

Oooh, cool.

Can you do recs posts every time I'm sick? This has been great. *GRIN* Well, except for the part where I'm sick.

Honestly, between the bad cold around Christmas and this stomach bug we've been passing around the family, I'm starting to think we should plan to just be sick forever. It's a good thing I have a flexible work schedule (and that the older kid is mostly old enough to stay home with her dad and a stack of novels and Princess Mononoke for a few hours midday), let's put it that way.

You are the best! Homo Ex Machina is responsible for me getting A Reputation in grad school, back when I was attempting the grad school thing. I feel a reread coming on.

Let us just say that while it was cool (and admittedly accurate) to be known as That Grad Student in Queer Theory Who Reads A Lot of Victorian Porn, my academic focus was not actually the use of sex machines to induce hysterical crisis, unlike what some people seemed to persist in believing...
