Like my new icon? Yay 4th of July!

Windows just tried to get me to add an update, the sole stated purpose of which was "To determine whether I'm running an authorized copy of Windows, and help me remedy the situation if not."

What the bloody heck is *wrong* with you people?

Okay, possibly probably almost certainly I've just read far too many pages of my borrowed Transmet trades in the last hour (they really need 'recommended maximum dosage' warnings), but, seriously, in the name of Bob and Eris: aaargh! The worst bit is that 90% of Windows users probably *did* install it without even wondering why they should. Even the ones who are in fact running pirated software. STOP BLINDLY TRUSTING CORPORATE MEDIA, WORLD. kthnxdai.

WGA software has been around for a while, and further if you read the license agreement for it they tell you it is still 'beta' software!!

Yes, but this actually came through the standard Windows Update! That's the stupidest part.

Its done that for a while too. They actually have two parts to it, one is the WGA software, and then another update that is the actual program that does the notifying. Plus they keep updating that second one (apparently it phones home often, and they've gotten some heat on it and will change it to check in less often).

Yeah, the whole WGA deal has been pretty high-profile lately for a while now on various tech news sites. This article (http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20060608002958907) pretty much gives laundry list of misrepresented info Microsoft threw out about it.

The company later denied it, but there were rumors going around (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/06/29/1657241) that Mcrosoft would be shutting off copies of Windows without WGA later in the year.

But yeah. People should *really* be paing attention to what they download for their Windows.

*is beginning to humor the idea of a mac mini...*
