melannen: Commander Valentine of Alpha Squad Seven, a red-haired female Nick Fury in space, smoking contemplatively (Default)

a gigantic nuclear furnace!

The professor is giving a lecture on the sun, and now "Why does the sun shine" is stuck in my head - this is due to the fact that he sounds *exactly* like the 'boring scientist' voiceover, cadence and all - when he said "The Sun is a middle-sized star" I could have sworn it was a clip from the song.

Ask me a question about one of my icons - what it is, why I have it, whatever. I need to reorganize them anyway.

What is up with dead redheads named lily?

I don't bloody know! Hence the icons.

Image
This is a drawing of Harry Potter's mother Lily, from a drawing of Lily and Petunia I did based on the cover photo of a poetry book. (you can see a bit of Pet's blond head behind her.)

Image
This is a drawing I did of Alder's wife Lily, from the Earthsea novels - the other kids' fantasy series I write and read fic in. She died before the story started, but, you know, the power of her Love saved the world anyway. She's standing at the border of the land of death.

Back when I had only three icons, one of my keywords was 'lily', and I'd rotate drawings of tragic redheads in and out of that slot.

Ah! This all makes sense now! :)

A bit off-topic, mayb, but for the Mathnet one... do you know if that's on video anywhere (I'd assume as part of some collection).

Apparently there was a set of at least some that came out in 1998, but they're kind of hard to find ... at one point, there were a few available to buy downloads of, I think, but they're probably down now. I'm not sure.

I'm trying to figure out in my head whether this is the show I remember. I seem to remember one "case" where some musician had been kidnapped, and sang "Please do what these people say." in the same tune as a telephone ringtone... and another episode with (either a teacher or) a kids show host who was "guilty" of telling kids wrong answers to questions...

Do either of these sound familiar?

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
The ringtone one sounds vaguely familiar. I don't actually remember the show that well either; the icon was originally just me teasing Katy about her Mulder and Scully obsession, but I kept it because it always gets squees of nostalgia when I use it.

[identity profile] zodiaccat.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. In that case, I suppose this is compulsory:

*ahem*

Squee.

That is all.

Teeny Little Super Guys intrigue me.

I made that icon from some glasses which belonged to my mother when she was in college. Originally, the men in question were wearing clothes, which disappeared when a cold drink was poured in, but the clothes disappeared for good after twenty-five years in the attic. (For some reason, Dad never let her put them in with the regular glasses!) Sister and I recently goaded her into hauling them down and showing them off, and she is *frighteningly* fond of them.

We're just frightened. Plus, if you stare at them long enough, the 1970's porn 'staches actually start to look *sexy*. *shiver*

The original Teeny Little Super Guy (http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_Dancer/teeny.html), of course, was a stop-motion animated Sesame Street character, who I had a mad crush on when I was about five. I put his theme song on the icon because I'm perverse, and I enjoy destroying people's childhoods.

Are you hanging a puppy in "tralalala?"
ext_193: (tralalala)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
No!

It's from an illustration in My Sister and I (http://melannen.livejournal.com/66838.html). Specifically,
Of if you're so sick
You're right in your bed
She'll send up letters
From downstairs instead.

It's a *stuffed* puppy! The fact that there are probably stuffed animals in that condition around my bed has nothing to do with it!

Oh, good. I was hoping.

Why is there a black dot in the top corner of your naked doll?
ext_193: (naked)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Because I cropped it out of my 'paper-doll' file, which has all the clothes I've ever made for her arranged around her, and I must have accidentally included a bit of something else in the file when I cropped it. Since it was originally supposed to be just a one-off joke, I never bothered to fix it, and now I've grown kinda fond. It adds to her air of mystery. q-:

.. well, actually it looks like there are bugs living in her hair, but hey! Accuracy!

Also, why is everyone zooming in on my naked icons?

[identity profile] melsmarsh.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Because they are there.

[identity profile] zodiaccat.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
'kay. If it hadn't already been explained, I'd have just assumed it was some sort of bee or firefly. (Since it looks like paper-doll-Sally appears to be looking at it.)
