"John ... keep working on love."

Nobody decided to tell me to stop thinking about SGA crossovers. So I ended up spending half the afternoon cataloging our hardcover SF collection. And I had an *epiphany* about last night's SGA episode! (pun not actually intended, but this post deserves it anyway.)

I've always been bugged by the way Sheppard reminds me of somebody. And I *finally* figured out who it is.

John Sheppard is actually .... Jonathan Livingston Seagull!

Oh yes. With the flying obsession, and the surfing, and the speshul Ascension powers, and how he's all 'been there, done that, come back to teach the kids' and the way he *is* with the Lorne and Ford and all of them, all mentor-y without being an actual authority figure at all, the totally *transcending* his geekiness, and the way he's so utterly competent, the excellent but reluctant leadership, the *utterly* foolhardy stunts that by some miracle don't get anyone killed, even him ...

Oh yes. Forget penguins. Colonel Sheppard is the only son of the Great Gull.

Lorne is Fletcher Lynd.

(You realize I'm going to keep posting this stuff until somebody tells me to stop, right? I have an *endless* supply of it.)

Your "this stuff" amuses me deeply. More crack, I say!

...Of course, I *am* the one writing the SG-1-as-curling-team AU crack!fic so possibly my tolerance for these things is higher than average.

Remember, you asked for it!

SG-as-curling team is so much more cracktastic than hockey AUs, and I find hockey AUs oddly compelling, so I am following your updates with *bated* breath. :D

Nope, not gonna happen. XD

(Mind you, this would all make quite a bit more sense to me if I had either read Jonathan Livingston Seagull, or seen more of Stargate than the one-half of the original movie I was able to catch before work one day... oh well.)

I think my mom has a copy, somewhere...

Actually, hidden in this entry is a link to a full-text pirate eBook of JLS. (And don't remember if you have broadband, but there's an LJ comm for downloading pirate stargate_eps too.) If you were, y'know, interested.

[identity profile] zodiaccat.livejournal.com 2006-01-16 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Piracy, yarr!

I suppose I could watch a few. XD (I take it that stargate_eps is the comm name?)

Actually, screwit-- *amazons SG1-S1*.

... sort of?

I thought for about thirty seconds about challenging you to a crossover-off (you know? like a dance-off, or the walk-off in Zoolander?), where we'd each take turns writing cracked comment crossovers until one of us ran out of ideas.

And then I realized that you would totally win, no contest. It'd be like Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Funny you should mention that, because ever since I misheard one of the previews last week, I've been *haunted* by this image where the Genii have Rodney captive in this temple full of Ancient medical artifacts, and John rushes in to rescue him, but Kolya says he has to use his gene to get the technology for them, and shoots Rodney in the gut to make John do it.

So of course he does, and he makes it through all the booby-traps, and at the top there's this room and this utterly cliche Ancient with a long white beard and stuff, and a table full of artifacts, and the Ancient says John has to pick just the right one. And John stops, and says, "You know, this is feeling very familiar."

And Rodney screams over the radio, "Oh for God's sake, Colonel Mitchell pulled a sword out of a stone last year! Just get the damn Grail and get down here before I bleed out and die!" and John points at the Ancient and says "You'd *better* not be thinking I'm going to stay here as some kind of guardian, because I do not *do* the peace and sanctity thing, got that?" before he dashes down to save the day just as the Ancient sets the temple to self-destruct.

Plus, there's this native scientist girl hanging around, and John sleeps with her before he realizes she's working for the Genii, and Rodney will *not* let him hear the end of it, until the girl gets sick of hearing them bicker and gives him this *scorching* kiss in front of John, and says "Actually, he slept with me first," and John gets this look on his face and Rodney shrugs sheeepishly and says, "Well, she is hot." And they bicker about which one she liked better all the way home.

... it's a talent?

*cracks up* TOO PERFECT.

But what about the time that Elizabeth's on this away mission with the guys, and the natives kidnap her because they think that she'll be able to translate this Ancient writing that makes them cursed. And she's like, "Okay, now let me go," and they're all, "We are disinclined to acquiesce to your request. How about we sacrifice you instead?"

And then John and Rodney steal a puddlejumper and go to rescue her, only Caldwell's after them . . .

Eeee! Too perfect. It doesn't help that I keep running into Pirates ficlets with Jack and Elizabeth and I'm like three paragraphs in and I'm like, wait, who is this Will person? Did I miss an SGA episode?

Now I'm starting to run low on fandoms that I'm absolutely certain we both know.

There's the one where Zelenka wakes up one morning and is inexplicably a giant cockroach. (Only really more like a trilobite, Rodney keeps insisting, but nobody listens to him.) And this being Atlantis, nobody is particularly concerned, once they figure out that he's not related to the Wraith. I see John swinging by Heightmeyer's office and saying, "Hey, have you heard? Zelenka's a cockroach!" And Rodney rigs up this really awesome floor-mounted keyboard with vocoder so he can type with *all* umpty-leven legs at once, and it's great, he can interface with the computers so fast it almost feels like he has the gene, and plus he can walk on the ceiling, and how cool is that? The only downside is that Heightmeyer keeps trying to corner him and psycholanalyze him, but on the other hand he's really good at hiding from her now. And he's starting to get Rodney's love for MREs, even.

Then Atlantis takes in some new allies who are actually traitors to the Wraith, but nobody realizes but Radek, and they tell him to stay out of the way for diplomatic purposes, but in the end he saves the day, even though his chitin gets badly cracked. And it ends with him and Rodney curled up in nthe lab together, exhausted, and Rodney is slowly scratching at his eyespots.

I was going to do a whole series of these with Radek running into increasingly more obscure Czech sci-fi novels. The next one would be "War with the Newts."

[identity profile] siegeofangels.livejournal.com 2006-01-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
You should totally do that, with the finding-themselves-in-media thing. You've seen the kind of crack in this fandom, it could totally work--there's some Ancient artifact that makes their stories real.

(Because you totally know Elizabeth would Ascend given the chance)

"John, when I'm--you know--when I'm Ascended, will you come up here sometimes?"

"Just me?"

"Yes, John."

"Will you be here too?"

"Yes, John, I will be really. I promise I will be, John."

"That's good," said John.

"John, promise you won't forget about me, ever. Not even when I'm a hundred."

John thought for a little.

"How old shall I be then?"

"Ninety-nine."

John nodded.

"I promise," he said.

Still with her eyes on the ocean Elizabeth put out a hand and felt for John's hand.

"John," said Elizabeth earnestly, "if I--if I'm not quite" she stopped and tried again-- "John, whatever happens, you will understand, won't you?"

"Understand what?"

"Oh, nothing." She laughed and jumped to her feet. "Come on!"

"Where?" said John.

"Anywhere," said Elizabeth.

That's *cheating*! Nothing trumps Winnie-The-Pooh fic for the crack!
And you've probably already seen my X-Files/The Cat In The Hat (http://www.livejournal.com/users/melannen/63634.html#cutid1) so I can't use that.

And then there's the story [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust and I were daring each other to write, where Rainbow Brite and the Color Kids meet the Endless --

[identity profile] siegeofangels.livejournal.com 2006-01-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
X-FILES. IN VERSE. You win, you really do.

(Actually, I was working on a Pooh-fic where it's, like, eighty years later, and Christopher Robin's been gone so long all of the denizens of the Hundred Acre Wood have Gone Wrong and gotten out and are killing people--Piglet's this twitchy, skinny little punk in a striped shirt with a switchblade . . . they're playing Poohsticks with explosives, et cetera. I was brainstorming with my sister and she made me stop talking about it.)

But I've never seen anything spawn the crack like SGA.
ext_193: (she-hulk is hot.)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2006-01-16 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
But that wasn't *even* the only time I've done X-Files in verse (http://www.livejournal.com/users/melannen/66838.html?thread=400918#t400918). It's frightening, really.

Piglet with a switchblade! Oh gosh, I can totally see that. Pooh's got one of those puffy jackets and an illegal handgun stuffed into his pants ...

SGA is the *special* fandom. There are probably others with at least as much crack by total numbers, but not by percentage. It's great! (Although DC comics does come close.)
