memage

1. [livejournal.com profile] enemy_anime tagged me.
2. List 5 random/strange/weird things about you. <- it would be harder to list five non-weird things.
3. Refuse to tag others, on principle of terminal laziness.

1. This year (well, starting after last year's Atlantis season break) marks the first time *ever* that I have followed a TV show as it airs, rather than in reruns. And I had to start by trying to follow seven different shows (nine if you count Daily Show and Colbert). And I suck at it, as can be made apparent by the fact that this'll be the third time in a row that I've forgotten that some of my shows are on tonight.

2. I walk on tip-toes, when I'm not wearing shoes with high ankles. I have ever since I'm a kid. It feels much more natural that that awkward flat-foot gait, even though admittedely it looks kind of funny. When I was little I used to be mildly worried about the verse we said in church that talked about "walking in the way of the Lord".

3. I listen to country music radio. Like, a lot. Granted, I also listen to Spike Jones and Elvis Costello and MIA and Tinsmith and anybody who does Simon and Garfunkel covers, among other things, but even so. Plus I've been known to belt out "Redneck Woman" in public places.

4. I can't go to sleep if my feet are cold. I've been known to absentmindedly chew on my own shoulder and give myself a hickey. There's nothing I enjoy so much as spending an evening reading my own old fic - and as I have 875 kB of it on this computer now, I actually have enough to do that with. I'm seriously considering trying to vid Firefly:Serenity to Spring and Fall. Somebody ought to talk me out of it.

5. When I first heard people talking about how you were definitely a geek if you had your own set of multi-sided dice, I agreed. Because I though multi-sided dice were for doing probability experiments. My parents were math teachers; that's what we used ours for! I think I even tried to calculate pi (or possibly e) with them once, though darned if I can remember how.

I seem to have signed up for the feedback challenge, which means I ought to be feedbacking every fic I read, for the next week. O dear.

Don't do it! For the love of God and all things holy, don't-- umm... actually... that might just work out. Goferit.

Because I though multi-sided dice were for doing probability experiments.

Actually, I think that gives you *extra* geek-cred. XD

\as does owning just a single 20-sided one for counting Magic life points.

That was kind of the idea. I was so geeky, even the D&D geeks were cooler than me!

Been there, done that, bought the oversized foam finger, ripped apart the stadium when the home team lost. XD

You might be able to get a crude estimate of pi by rolling 2d{x} where x is as big as you can get for more accurate results. The probability that two sufficiently large, randomly chosen integers are coprime is 6/(pi^2). By counting hits and misses, you could results that were accurate to about one decimal place.

Crunching some numbers, if you disregard all rolls where one of the die turns up a 1, and you're rolling 2d100, your approximation should approach 3.160. If you're just using 2d20, you'll get 3.167. If, by some chance, you managed to either get your hands on 2d1000 (or faked it with 6d10), you'd end up with 3.1445.

That sounds familiar. I probably tried to fake it with 6d10, and then got bored before the approximation was very close at all. I've been sad lately that I've forgotten all the stupid math tricks I used to love.

...Or, knowing me, rolling 1d10 six times each...

You have nothing to worry about! Don't you remember that poem?

"My son, my precious child,
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of toeprints,
it was then that I carried you."

"You know how it goes, right? A man was walking across the sand with his Lord beside him, and he looked back at their tracks trailing behind-- and suddenly a volcano erupted and immolated them with burning ash, thus preserving the footprints for all time and providing important evidence of the theory of evolution."

Okay... I absolutely *must* know what that is from. o_o

Hate to disappoint you, but it was me, at three in the morning last summer, trying to come up with captions for my vacation pictures. (http://pics.livejournal.com/melannen/pic/0002xfyr/g8)

[identity profile] zodiaccat.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
How is that disappointing? It just went from a funny quote to a funny caption! XD

Because it's Gerard Manley Hopkins. That's what he *does*. (http://www.bartleby.com/122/31.html) I think he spent to long in school having to scan Old English poetry.

I think you should try vidding it! It'd be interesting to see how it turns out.

By the time they got to the kissy part I *almost* wanted to see it. d-:

I didn't know! And I don't really care, actually. This isn't a "go find and worship everything related to it" fandom. This is an "Alan Shore and Denny Crane are GODS" fandom. d-:

I sorta think I liked House better before Stacy showed up - he's really different with her there. On the other hand, Stacy! When she said, "Mark knows when things are bad I always like to have an escape route prepared," just as she'd finished complaining about how bad things were with him, as she was leading House up to a hotel room...

And here I thought that the reason I couldn't get you into Highlander is that you think a show needs to have more to it that a couple of awesome characters...

He's got a soft side, I think it's cute! ([livejournal.com profile] mbincollege was comparing her to Diana Fowley, which, not so much.)

I think a SF/F show (a la Stargate, Buffy) needs to have *much* more to it than a couple of awesome characters. If it's set in *this* world (a la BL or House), though, all it needs is one or two god-like characters and some fun plotlines. XF is sort of on the borderline between the two (it needs a little more than great characters and good plots, but it doesn't actually have to make *sense*, whereas I expect your SGs and your BtVSs to have some degree of internal consistency). (However, the reason you haven't got me into Highlander is probably simply that you haved really *tried*.) d-:
