heart of gold

I spent most of the afternoon today chopping, cooking, and pureeing pumpkins. Because, you see, Mom bought three pumpkins for Halloween, nobody carved them, Mom said it was too much trouble for her, and I was not going to let them rot on the front porch like the last few years. And I did it, with no bloodshed! Unfortunately, what Mom didn't tell me is that she had already bought canned pumpkin for her Thanksgiving pies, and thus she expects *me* to be the one to use the stuff.

This is the same problem I had last month when I shelled a pint of black walnuts and they rotted before they got used.

Um. Pumpkin fudge takes one tablespoon a batch, so that'll be 128 batches of pumpkin fudge, then!

But not for a couple weeks, because right now I'm extremely sick of the smell of pumpkin.

One tablespoon per batch? That's, er, not much pumpkin. Big pumpkins don't make very good cooking pumpkins, although if you puree them long enough it probably doesn't matter much. If you still have any when I'm back for Thanksgiving (with three pumpkins I'm imagining you will), maybe we can try some Exciting Pumpkin Recipes if we have time. Also, pureed pumpkin freezes quite well!

These were not, in fact, large pumpkins, which is partly why I was bound and determined not to let 'em rot - they were about ideal baking-pumpkin size, in fact. (Mom says that is the wrong fudge recipe, but I might try it anyway; the old recipe was very yummy, but came out the exact texture and color of dog doo.) I also have heirloom pumpkin cookie and pumpkin bread recipes I want to try, if I get around to it, maybe, and Mom is daring me to try soup, or hamburgers, both of which I think I will pass on. If you have Exciting Pumpkin Recipes, however, certainly we should try them!

I tried making Pumpkin Scones once but they ended up being pretty icky. I haven't yet been brave enough to make Pumpkin Soup, but I want to try Pumpkin Pancakes..

Pumpkin bread *is* delicious!

MAybe I should just make a couple dozen tiny loaves of pumpkin bread to mail out for Christmas presents.

See! That will be cheaper than actually buying gifts! :)
