Okay, the USGS says that was a magnitude 5.9 quake in Northern Virginia, and sister in Boston says they felt it too. Which means it was neither the washing machine going mad, a car hitting the building, or somebody bombing Washington DC.

(It is amazing how much thinking there is time to do in what I went back and estimated must have been around one minute of shaking.)
