February 28th, 2005 05:53 am - Pay Attention To Mee!
I found a googlewhack! My life is now complete! I even dropped it on the Stack and everything! And what a googlewhack:

autodidacticism gnome

At least, unless/until this entry gets indexed.

(A googlewhack is a pair of words which are recognized as real words by Google's dictionary function, and only bring up one page as a search result when searched for together on Google's search engine. The concept was created about three years ago and got a lot of press around then as people tried to gather a set for geek cred or something, I dunno. I've sort of been half-heartedly looking for one since I heard about it then, and this is the first time I happened to chance upon one. w00t.)

(Previous parenthetical courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] theferrett's Tips for Lj Attention Whores... er, that is, Compleat Guide to Livejournal Stardom and Fame, which I re-read after [livejournal.com profile] cathexys linked it a few days back, and I've been pondering it since. Several of his tips I frequently ignore and for good reason, but one that's been niggling at me most is Step #2: Write As If Your Audience Didn't Know You. Because as anyone who's been reading this journal knows, I frequently post things with little or no explanation, or post a link instead of an explanation, or just expect people to either know what I'm talking about or look it up for themselves. This is because, when talking to people in real life, I always have to waste a terrific amount of energy trying to translate from me-language, ripe with jargon from several dozen subcultures, personal jokes, unique vocabulary, and obscure references, to something that can be understood by people who haven't read all the same books I have. I *like* being able to not worry about that as much here, and still have some people get what I'm saying, and to expect the people who don't get it to google it if they care. This is one of my favorite things about having an internet journal as a private playground.

I guess that means my pretentious-bastard factor is substantially larger than my attention-whore factor. I think I have no problem with that. What do you think?)

(And in a momentary victory by the attention-whore side, this post should get me the most comments *evar*, since I followed all his rules that I could. Oh, by the way, hi, [livejournal.com profile] brianmathews. Do I know you?)

(Note that [livejournal.com profile] theferrett's most accurate tip for accumulating comments, "convince people you're sexy", is hidden in part 1.5)

Edit: UMD is closed for expectation of snow *again*! This is not helping my attempt to get back on a regular sleep schedule.
