I'm still not caught up on my flist. skip=150, and that didn't even include the communities. [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust and [livejournal.com profile] reclusivewaffle and I spent the entire day organizing our collection of sf novels. We did finally find shelf space for all of them, la. Rough estimate: over 1,000 standard paperbacks + several hundred hardcovers + lots of YA. That doesn't even include all the SW novels (and I mean *all*) and four boxes of ST books. Gah.

Speaking of Trek novels, while we were at it I thumbed through the ST:MP novelization and found *that* footnote. You know, *that* one, with the comment from Admiral Kirk: "I was never aware of the lovers rumor, although I have been told that Spock encountered it several times. . . Myself, I dislike being thought so foolish that I would select a love partner who came into sexual heat only once every seven years." I found it hilarious the first time I read it, about eight years ago, and read it out loud to everyone in earshot. Nobody understood why I thought it so wonderful. I think that was my first real introduction to the concept of slash fandom. Ah, nostalgia. It's even funnier now, of course. Not that I've ever actually read any K/S. Spock was too concerned with repressing* everything; yeah, he was clearly madly in love with Kirk, but no way he could have admitted it to himself enough to act on it. At least not until the later movies. And, as Kirk states in the footnotes, he preferred seducing anything that moved and was female. He probably would have done the Horta if she weren't so badly wounded.

The joy of Vulcan linguistics.

Now, that Kirk/Koloth het in New Voyages? That worked, dodgy science aside. That is still one of my favorite fanfics ever. It probably shaped my young mind far more than was healthy, though.

There's things I should be doing, but I have a headache (hopefully not the start of flu, cross fingers), so I think I shall make some tea, grab some quilts, and curl up with The Fate of the Phoenix, for some captiveprinceling!James. Fanfic that does *not* require staring at an LCD screen. If I can convince myself to turn the computer off. Commander/James/Spock/Jim! You know, I think that's why I've never been tempted to read ST fic online-- the published fanfic was always so much richer to me, as a text, than the show, and there's so much of it I'll never run out.

*sorry, not repressing. Cthia, of course, actually means mastery of emotion, not repression. Only adepts of kohlinar go so far as to attempt to eradicate *all* emotion ...oh. Um, it's all Amanda'a fault. *flrrd*
