you'll get back on track

I can now watch .wmv files on my computer! It was entirely painless! Maybe I'm actually getting the hang of this linux thing after three years. Next thing is to attempt to get RealPlayer files to play, and to see if I can get a sound recorder/editor working. And it's all [livejournal.com profile] metafandom's fault, for making me desire vids when [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust's site was down.

I think that was the first time I'd ever seen my pro-Slytherin "It's Not Easy Being Green" HP vid on a computer with a decent monitor. To celebrate, I have re-uploaded it to my webspace. Here's the webpage it can download from, which is also a special bonus preview of the website revamp I was half-heartedly working on over break.

The timing in the middle is a lot more off than I thought the last time I watched it, but I still like it. Yay! There need to be more *good* hp vids.

Oh, you can watch [livejournal.com profile] vidding now! There was a Harry/Draco one posted yesterday that I'll dl as soon as I'm not TEH BUSY. And there's a lot of other good stuff if you go through the comm archives. And I just found [livejournal.com profile] fan_vids the other day, too, that I need to investigate. Most people post in .wmv format, so you should be good.

*distracts you*

There must be a lot flocked on that community, then, 'cause I didn't see any H/D . . . and it seems to be mostly .wmv 9, which is no good. Oh well.

Hmm, maybe it was in the other comm, then ... yep, [livejournal.com profile] fan_vids. Go look there. d-:

Neat! I would have expected more trouble with WMV than with RM.. let me know how it goes.

Well, to get WMV up to version 8, all I needed was to install w32codecs , which miraculously just - installed - happily on the first try, once I found it.

Apparently WMV 9 is not allowed on linux, though.

Really? xinehq claims all you need to do is copy over the DLLs from Windows to /usr/lib/win32 and says they're also available for download from here, along with the QuickTime and RealMedia DLLs, in the "essential codecs package"

I tried it, it just segfaulted with xine-ui-0.99.2 linked against xine-lib-1-rc5, but it works (mostly) with xine-ui-0.99.3 linked against xine-lib-1.0..

Have you tried mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/news.html)? I've found that it's less painful than xine.
