home again, home again, lickety-split
They're clearing all the leaves off the sidewalks at school, and leaving them in these *huge* piles in front of the building. Can you say huge? HUGE. I have womnafully resisted temptation so far, but if they're still there I don't know if I will be able to, especially since Mom wants me to get a yearbook picture taken.
Actually I'm at home right now. Mom said she'd saved the leaves here for me to rake; they all came down over the weekend in a span of less than forty-eight hours and they're literally ankle-deep in the yard. I would, too, if I didn't feel like UI had so much stuff to do at school. Mom has a day off from her volunteer work tomorrow, anyway.
I'd forgotten how much I love this house in the fall, even more than I love fall in general. It's quiet except for the tick of the old mantle clock and the heat soughing on and off; it's just cold enough to snuggle up on the couch; and the teakettle is almost always on. I spent most of the evening drifitng in and out of sleep while supposedly reading my textbooks.
Mom's getting me up to go vote early tomorrow. I found my "voter notification card", having been scared out of my wits by internet people, even though *none* of the ballot options are really up for grabs; the incumbent senator, representative, and judges are goong to win, the ballot question is going to pass, and Kerry's going to get the electoral votes; so I doubt anyone will bother with voter fraud. Even if we are still stuck with the HIGHLY STUPID touch-screen voting machines still.
I'm with Katy. I'm going Zen. We're probably screwed either way, as usual; we'll just look much less stupid if we show that we've learned from our mistakes. Which we've already proven we can't do, what with the HIGHLY STUPID touch-screen voting machines. Seriously-- if we don't have a clear winner by Thanksgiving, I'm giving up on democracy, because we clearly aren't responsible enough to handle it.
I wore my Kerry/Edwards button all day today, and one of my profs asked if I had voted. Not if I was *going to*, if I had. Are that many people really voting absentee/early? Granted it's a college campus, but still, that seems like it's asking for trouble to me. Maybe I'm just terribly old-fashioned.
Er. Enough about that. Ice cream is yummy!
