!

Just back from hanging out at [livejournal.com profile] speakerender's. Didn't get lost once either, yay! And actually got there on time, that's twice in a week I've been somewhere on time, that might be a record!

Anyway, he showed me a coupla Stargate episodes, so ya'll get to put up with a bunch of cross-fandom blathering! Yay! I don't think anyone on my flist is into both Stargate and Highlander, so I shall start by saying that I figured out what kept bothering me when I saw SG:Atlantis promos. We watched th Atlantis premier and Major Shepard kept reminding me of Adam Pierson. Oh, it's not enough that Agent Doggett was hanging around acting all stoic and marine-y as usual, but every time I convinced myself that I was just imagining the resemblence with Major Shepard, there'd be a shot from the right camera angle or there'd be something about the way he moved and darnit, it's definitely Adam Pierson showing through again. I know it's a different actor and the voice was way wrong and the ethical framework definitely was, and whenever he was trying to act all military he actually reminded me more of Han Solo (and *anything* that makes me think the phrase 'bastard mpreg lovechild of Methos and Han' is severely wrong), but the resemblence was definitely there, and the old ones are good at disguises. Wouldn't it be interesting if the Immortals were related to the Ancients and thus the genetic markers which allow use of the Ancients' techonology, so of course the most Ancient of all humans has a special touch with it? And then the girl made those comments about how 'some of us can sense them coming' and gave him that significant look? And the Enemy never get old, heal super-quickly and can only be killed by swords?

Okay, so actually I know crap-all about Stargate background. I only started watching the end of last semester because it was what [livejournal.com profile] reclusivewaffle brought up whenever I started talking fandom, and these days I seem to communicate with people by learning their fandoms first. He took rather extreme measures to ensure I'd not get a chance to discuss it with him, but I like what I've seen of it and I think he'd want me to keep watching anyway. q-: Anyway, yes, the first thing I do when I get into a new fandom is go mad with the crossovers. I think it has to do with my difficulty with suspension of disbelief. If one sincerely believes in jedi, several varieties of wizards and witches, the tar-aiym krang, the consortium, the stargates, immortals, slayers, Howards, Vulcans, Time-Lords, Nafsu cola, Tol Eressea, the Buggre Alle This bible, the Endless, Thermo-Man, the Lone Power, the Necronomicon, the quest for the holy grail, and a few dozen other things, well then it's only natural to try to reconcile them, right?

I tried to convince [livejournal.com profile] speakerender that the slug creature that got implanted in Scully in that Season 8 x-files episode was really some kind of degenerate goa'uld, but I think he thinks I'm crazy. Oh well. I haven't seen a single sg1/xf crossover fic which mentions it either. I haven't seen a single sg1 crossover which was any good at all actually, and I got so desperate I even tried a Dexter's Laboratory one. I wonder if there are any good ones. Anyway, it was quite good althought the ending was a bit of a disappointment. And the science was completely off-the-wall, but that's not really worth even attempting in Stargate, from what I've seen.

I have read rather ridiculous amounts of non-crossover sg1 fic. (No SG:Atlantis though. It seems a bit early to start that, even though people have, I know. And the only subtext I saw was those two scientists at the end who were going on about how they were as out as it's possible to get, and yet still no dates.) We did watch an sg1 episode. It's entertaining to watch a series canon for the first time when you're already steeped in slash fanon. I had that experience when I started HL, and my reaction there was that the slashers were really taking it out of context, fun as it was. My reaction in SG1 is wow, the slashers are *under*-doing it. In the last scene Daniel pretty much asked outright, "So, Jack, you *did* haul me off and ravish me while you had the chance, right?" And Jack looked over his oatmeal and very clearly *didn't* say, "well, um, both of you, come to think of it." heh. [livejournal.com profile] speakerender thinks I'm reading a lot more into that episode than really happened. q-:

Oh yeah-- we watched The One With The Time Loop (curse Friends for ruining that construction for the rest of us!). It was much better than TOWTTL in XF or ST:STNG; they didn't cheat by reusing footage as much, and, well, they didn't all die repeatedly either. TOWTTL is one of those shows that is required by contract in every SF series, just like The One Where They Fight The Nazis and The One With The Pointed AU Dream and The One Where It Can't Hurt You If You Know It's An Illusion. Someone should try to come up with a definitive list of those.

I also watched the special last night on the Da Vinci code since Mom had the TV on, and it just made me grrrrr-mad. Honestly. I went afterward and looked through all the Bible fic and meta that Dad collected (and *that* was depressing, I kept reminding myself to put them back so he'd know where they were and then realizing that he didn't need them anymore, because he finally got his answers. Plus he's scribbled marginalia all over them and I can't discuss it with him anymore, grr, wah,) and they agreed with me. Mary Magdalene started out as a nutcase and finished as a fangirl and that's a really thin line anyway, and I'm sure she'd have born his kids if he *asked*, but there's a reason there's absolutely no evidence of it anywhere. The only reason to think Christ had a wife is that in that time and place he would've been expected to, and when did he ever do what was expected? If he did have one, the most logical answer is that she was back in Nazareth complaining about her no-good husband who was wandering around pretending to be a prophet while she slaved to feed the family. (although evidence does suggest that like Mohammad and St. Jerome, to name a few, Christ was pretty heavily bankrolled by fangirls.) But that's got me wanting to get into biblefic again, as if I need *more* to write, blerg. I'd been looking into churchy stuff anyway for a couple of xf fic I've been halfheartedly playing with. (does anyone know offhand what the Catholic reading would be on the fourth Sunday of Advent, 2012? One of the Lutheran ones prophesies a plague of bees.)

That's enough of that, I think. Hey, [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust, sister-like object? See if I write you any more letters! (;

YAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!

Hey, [info]stellar_dust, sister-like object

Pff. Can we say "five years ago"? Heh.

... wow, my predictions for those groups were pretty much on target. Go me!

*whine* I don't have time for another fandom. Nope. Nope. And if I did, Buffy would be next on my list anyway. Plus I should watch more Star Trek reruns. Waaahhh!

I have a feeling you'd absolutely love the 6th season episode of SG1 where they stumble onto a town where a company is breeding go'ulds and secretly implanting them into towns people

Sg1

I've just been getting into sg1 this year too, I think its one of the better scifi shows around now. And its chock-full of humorous lines ripe for fan-interpretation. Teal'q's kinda kinky.

Jack: Well, what do we do now.

Teal'q: I have heard of a place where humans wrestle each other in a pit of jello.

Jack: . . . Call Daniel.
