Okay, traditional NaNo poll:

[Poll #292](Quick NaNo summary, if you care: Sword&Sorcery set in vaguely Bronze Age Mesopotamia. Plot is currently nebulous; will be doing a lot of playing with worldbuilding, especially gender, and a lot of wibbling about worldbuilding. What plot there is, is kind of the traditional Chosen-One-Kills-Evil-Wizard storyline, but backwards and upside-down: Evil Wizard already killed, Chosen One has to live down the weird instead of living up to it. ...Will probably give up within about a week, but all bets are off. Also there is an ancient Sumerian glam rocker.)

But I have no webspace! ;_;

Run a google search on ' mesopotamians.mp3 -download ' and you can pirate it yourself. :P I used the third search result.

... well, Al Gore DID win a Nobel Prize, so global warming is now EXTRA-validated?

Read their TOS (http://www.drak.net/about/tos.html), specifically the section on "high resource sites." Do you think your rotating banner thing would violate that?

I'm pretty sure that refers to images that continually rotate, not just on pageloads, and specifically that it refers to ads - I doubt my banner rotate would even register with them; it doesn't use any more bandwidth than just loading a normal image would. (Mind you, that paragraph also bans subhosting, so I wouldn't have borrowed space there anyway, and mp3s, and mpgs, and image archives...) I have a feeling that everything in that paragraph is only if you're doing that one thing only and egregiously and to such and extent that it eats up all your resources, but I could be wrong. How does it compare to other hosts' TOSs on those subjects?

[identity profile] stellar_dust [journalfen.net] 2007-10-16 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they mean something different by subhosting .. okay, I can't find it now, but I swear I saw a reference to multiple users. Hmm. Usually it would say multiple ftp/ssh accounts in the big chart of services offered. But since it explicitly says that you can't sell accounts unless you have a reseller account, that should mean that loaning accounts is okay? Hum, maybe I'll shoot a comment or email to NFZ about that - I *know* they have people editing the site from all over the world, so surely it's fine?

(Also, nothing in that paragraph is not allowed - they just charge you extra if it's excessive. Which is actually another thing I really like about them - if you use more space or more bandwidth than you have, they don't shut you down, they just charge you more and/or upgrade your account.)

I could always just sign up for a month and see how it goes .. in fact, that's probably what I should do no matter who I end up choosing.

Ok, so, I emailed them (http://stellar-dust.livejournal.com/319978.html#comments) - and THEY GOT BACK TO ME ALREADY! That took about 15 minutes! :O !

So - they allow multiple ftp, but only one SSH account. Are you cool with having the same type of access as with my old account?

And they sound like they're fine with fic/vids unless they get DMCA'd, in which case they deal with it in a logical manner (http://www.drak.net/dmca.html).

Well, the service certainly sounds good, anyway!

Srsly, don't pick based on what's convenient for me. If I decided I really need something, I'll buy my own webspace. :D I just wanted someplace to dump files to link to in the meantime. FTP would be fine (maybe even one that works with something other than ws_ftp!)
