to cogitate and to solve.

Tonight was a community open mike we were required to go to in college park. I, working under the mistaken assumption that my roommate knew the bus routes, trusted her on the timing, so we ended up walking over half of the city and being half an hour late to the open mike, so (tragedy of tragedies!) I didn't get to read. The one person there voluntarily was really good, however.

Most of us walked back, too. I really love walking at night. It's beautiful and still and so very there, and I've never accepted that I'm supposed to be afraid. This time, however, we went in a huge group, and somehow they all started talking '80s television.

This is something I know nothing about. My childhood TV watching was limited entirely to PBS. I cannot sing the theme song to "David the Gnome" or "Umbrella Tree" or whatever else. I felt utterly isolated and alien and inadequate.

On a possibly related topic, look, new icon! q: I was getting tired of staring at all of [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust's Mulder/Scully ones, when we all *know* that Monday/Frankly is infinitely cooler.

Nice icon. D'you believe Tim's the only person I've ever met who remembers Zoobilee Zoo?

Yeah yeah. I should make some non-x-files ones but I keep getting inspired.

I've had other people recall it . . . I think . .

I was only kidding, y'know. Seeing as my current tally is two PotC, two webcomics, two me-art, one Shakespeare, one McCarthy, and one random lithograph, you're ahead on variety.

Yep, PBS children can have inside jokes, too, so there, major networks. *nyah*

I was thinking about making a harry potter one, but no quotes from OotP jumped out at me, so, oh well.

PBS children

Ooh, I like it. Parallel to 'latchkey kids' and "thalidomide children" and such! Finally, a name for what I am.

Note that I don't even have an HP one at the moment, just my fake Draco/Ginny. Have been uninspired on the hp icon front, yes.

He was too specific for the sort of hp posts I've been making lately, I decided, so I put a more general one up . .

Aw, he was cute. You've got 4 icon spaces left, you know, just waiting to be filled ...

I was talking to someone the other day and said "MPT" instead of "PBS". Silly MD.

But what about poor Martha?

Okay, I didn't mean it in a *shippy* sense.

And frankly it scares me you remembered that . . . it's been so long since Square One ended that I barely remember anything except how cool it was.

. . . you don't by chance have any episodes, do you?

How could you compare it to Mulder/Scully and *not* mean it in a shippy sense? d-:

*eyeroll* not everything is shippy, y'know.

Anyone, from what I remember, it really was more an olderbrother/younger sister thing. At least with Kate. The last two seasons after she left really went downhill. q;

Um. Pardon me whilst I hogtie my inner rabid fan.

Well, ok, not so inner. Um. Yes.

Alas, no. I'll keep my eyes open for some, though. They were supposed to be rerunning it on something called "Noggin" a few years ago as I recall, so there might be some eps floating around Usenet.

There's supposedly an episode here, but I lack the plug-in so I don't know if it works. <http://www.squareonetv.org/theater/default.asp?image=images/02_01.jpg

The National Public Broadcasting Archives at Maryland seem to have some Square One related material here and here. I can't tell if they have actual programs available or not, though.

Teeny little super guy!

Mathman never made much of an impression, perhaps because most of the computer games I played actually resembled it greatly.

*sigh* I wonder is mathchase still exists in any form . . .

Just thought I'd throw this out there...

Look around you
There are many things to see
That some would say could never be
These things I know
It's true and I will tell you so
They are there to see
If you believe.

Trolls and creatures and fairy kings
Birds that talk and fish that sing
And if your heart is true
Then you will find them too
In every wish and dream and happy home
You will find the kingdom of the gnome.

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2004-03-10 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. They were wandering around, *singing* that, and saying repeatedly that they didn't remember what the show itself was actually about. So I suggested probably trolls and creatures and fairy kings and birds that talk and fish that sing, and they called me a smart-aleck. q:

[identity profile] zodiaccat.livejournal.com 2004-03-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that's pretty accurate. The trolls were typical "We're the bad guys cause... umm... cause we are!" stupid villians, and David more or less simply tricked them into doing something stupid, or letting themselves turn to stone. (Hmm... nah, can't be)

I seem to remember one episode where they were all upset that their milk hadn't delivered, so they made a rational decision... If our milk isn't here, the milkman must be in mortal danger. We must save him! (It turned out his daughter really was in trouble, so I guess it all worked out.)

If you haven't already, watch a few episodes. It's funny to watch it and think; "My goodness, people actually found this entertaining?" (And yes, I did. My pre-Kindergarten days were always spent watching this immediately before "The Phantom Tollbooth")

As a side note, I am absolutely certain that David married his wife for her looks, cause she has got to be the most vapid, hollow woman (gnome-ess?) in television history...

Fairy King: Make sure you do not touch the water of the river.

David's Wife: Ooh! I think I'll watch the little waves my hand makes!

Monster Under Water: GrrrrrROW!
