. . . okaaay.

I just woke up (having missed my alarm) from a long, elaborate, and internally consistent dream which culminated with John Kerry confessing on national TV that many years ago, he had gone by the name Caspian while riding with his brother-in-arms Howard Dean, aka Death on a Horse.

Clearly I need to stop with the fanfic right before bed.

I wish I had dreams like yours. The best I've had recently was one with bizzare musical instruments - some kind of giant flute and something that combined a large set of panpipes or something like it with four strings on a frame that I guess were supposed to resonate in some way with the pipes..

Most likely they were resonators, as Marimba/Vibraphone resonators look like panpipes. There probably is an instrument similar to what you described in Africa. Except they'd use gourds!

Well, the key there is "were supposed to" - in a marimba or vibraphone the resonating element would be underneath and specific to the particular wooden or metal plank upon which one beats. Here, there didn't appear to be any actual way to play the instrument - the pipes were laid flat on a surface, and the strings were probably about 18" above the pipes and ran perpendicular to the orientation of any individual pipe. The whole thing didn't make any sense at all and didn't really even in while I was in the dream - the giant flute was much more plausible, though it was really humongous, probably the size of a didgeridoo - I guess there exist contrabass and larger recorders that are that size, but this was a definitely a transverse flute and had 9 holes in it (I remember, because I was expecting it to have 6.)

You should invent this instrument. After all, "legend" has it that the modern steel drum first came to its creator in a dream. It's not really legend since the steel drum is a recent creation and its inventor is still alive to confirm this. But still.

Hee.. If it ever mutates in my head into something that makes the slightest bit of acoustical sense, I'll surely make an attempt;-)

This is the contemporary musical period, things dont have to make acoustical sense...or even sound good!
