and here we are.

So I got the semester off to a rollicking start by sleeping through my alarm clock. Luckily, classes were cancelled today due to snow.

Snow! Snow snow snow!

Oh, and speaking of warm cozy feelings, yesterday while I was upacking/organizing I pulled out my quilt pieces. I have 13 strips done. I had no idea I had so many. That's 350 squares, over 1000 inches of handsewn seams, almost half the total quilt top sewn! It actually looks like a quilt when spread out on the floor. I might actually finish this thing.

Also while cleaning/unpacking, I put on an episode of Highlander, solely because I've been unable to prevent myself from reading the fanfic. It's odd how watching the show gives me a far more transgressive feeling than reading the slash ever did; I mean, I've never bought into the 'slash as subversion' arguments. But I get it now, especially when the Spike channel puts up those little corner overlays about 'the first network just for men!' while Duncan is wet and/or shirtless. I mean, I somehow doubt men watch Oh! shows for similar purposes.

Oh, wait, they show Xena. Never mind.

Bah. Some people get off for snow. Others of us have to drive through foot-high snow to return coffeepots and write research proposals. Bah.

The people living around some people actually know how to drive in the snow. Work wasn't closed today, incidentally.

I wish my job would potentially close for any reason *grumble*

Mine closed for a day and a half in the week before I started (for the hurricane). Folks working with me remember that they have closed before that, but don't remember when.

SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! Snow makes you strong! Strength crushes enemies! SNOW!

Mmmm, deuterium.

I have never had a snow day in my *entire* life. Not one measly day off because of weather of any sort. Power goes out in a thunderstorm? Classes go on. Foot of snow overnight?. Minus thirty celsius? Classes anyway. Bah.

Heh. I've got out for power outages, tornadoes, heat waves, terrorist attacks, hurricanes, bomb threats, and snow. We're chicken down here.

To be fair, this is about half a commuter school, and the traffic around here gets unnegotiable at the slightest provocation.

Not to mention plain ol' rain. I recall one closure that was reportedly due to "heavy rains". No reported power outages (possibly lightning; I cannot quite remember), just a bad storm.

And they did eventually stop sending people home for bomb threats.

Once in middle school I got off on threat of rain. But I ended up at school anyway, working on some Odyssey of the Mind nonsense.

Just passing through your journal while reading my friend's friends list. I love pimping Highlander for the sake of the show itself (as well as the slash joy). If you have any questions about the logic of the show or anything... feel free to ask.

Thanks! I'm enjoying it so far. Actually, the more I see of the show (all of, um, 3.5 episodes so far) the less I agree with all the D/M slash that everybody writes so well. Duncan's just that intense with *everybody* he knows, even if Methos is madly in love with him.

My main question is why nobody thought to tell me that "Princes of the Universe" was the theme song. I've been saying for years that needed to be the theme for an sf show.

Highlander slash... Theme song by Queen... Yeah.

Having seen the show first, that intensity is the *only* reason I can give any believability credit the slash. Mind you, I will enjoy slash that I don't believe. Duncan is very much shaped by his clan heritage and is very heterosexual. Methos on the other hand... well, you have to wait until season three for Methos... but he escapes all definitions and I would find it hard to believe him even worrying about a word like homosexual. Ummm... not that it's clear where my preference lies at all...
