Wiigii! I got xine working! I can play DVDs on my computer now! .. well, sorta. The video is really, really jerky. I have a feeling I should reduce the resolution on my monitor, but, of course, I have no idea how to do that. Also, of course, I'm committing a federal crime, but I had deCSS on my computer anyway just out of *principle*, so that's nothing new. To quote Oliver Wendell Jones, "Avast, ye scurvy corporate swabs! Prepare to be boarded!"

I ended up having to completely reinstall xine, too. I have yet to have any of the preinstalled packages actually work right. I have a feeling I might have been better off just diving in with slackware. Ah, well, may be if I get completely bored sometime I'll wipe it all and start with a clean slate. Except I've no idea if Ican write cds currently. . .

I really do prefer things that don't work right, that need fixing. Not only do I get the thing itself, I get the fun of fixing it, too. I have a feeling there's a metaphor for fanfic lurking in there somewhere.

Let's see. Tuesday Mom and I visited a lawyer to go over inheritance stuff. It was very exciting. I dressed up all demure and businesslike and then realized that I was still wearing chipped-up sparkly red nail polish from New Year's. w00t. Also? Mom is rich. No, really. If you add in my mutual fund, which is really her money anyway, there's over a million dollars in assets. No, really. Sure, three-quarters of it is locked up in the house and IRAs, but still! Helped me feel less guilty about having probably lost my scholarship, anyway. Although as far as I can tell the university hasn't realized it yet, so let's cross our fingers and hope, eh?

I use Ogle myself. It works okay, although since right now I don't have the nvidia drivers installed (2.6.0 kernel), it's choppy and the interlacing's not great.

Also, IANAL but I understand that possession of deCSS isn't illegal, only distributing it is. Such is the nature of the DMCA.

Whee.. I just burnt some slack 9.1 CDs, so I can play with kernel 2.6. Took forever to download - BitTorrent is dumb - so if you want to try it let me know and I'll make you copies. As I recall, your purveyor of tentacled monstrosities has got it right - I recall ogle working better for stellar_dust too.
