pwdre ser

Since last update, I have:
Been immortalized at the Pit of Voles;
Been metaquoted;
Held a piece of ALH 84001.

Five bonus points to anyone who gets all three of those without googling. (heh. The writer's house speaker last night, when asked what her most important reference source was as a poet and translator, answered without hesitation, 'Google.')

So, yeah, today was the behind-the-scenes field trip to the rocks and meteorite collections at the National Museum of Natural History. Bendable sandstone! The Voice of God! Canadian diamond ore! The oldest Earth rock! The oldest rock *on* Earth! The K-T boundary iridium layer! Gastroliths and coproliths! A slab of the Ahnighito meteorite! Mars rocks! The story behind the only window in a NMNH display! And more!

--So that was fun. On the way back the subway was delayed, the first time that's ever happened to me. No idea why, they didn't bother with silly excuses like 'the wrong sort of snow.' :p

In other news, I have found Lucky Starr fanfic! And my room is no longer boiling, yay.

Well, the first is easiest enough. I really only skimmed it, mind you, for fear of being.. contaminated.. eek ack
ook.

I'm pretty sure ALH 84001 is one of the Martian metorites found in Antarctica that was supposed to show some kind of life on Mars..A NASA search confirms this.

As far as being metaquoted.. Probably on one of your friends' livejournals, or on a FOAF's journal, but that would require actual effort to find. Can I have three bonus points instead of five?;-)

Channeling Lisa for your user icon, are you? Well, I suppose dressing her like Lisa is an acceptable substitute if you're not actually going to dress up like her yourself. Which you said you would, but eventually agreed you wouldn't;-)

Am curious as to how you found that story. Am curious as to why, if you found that story, you are unaware who I'm channelling for my user icon.

Am curious as to when I ever had a discussion about dressing like Lisa, as I don't remember this.

Am pointing you to [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes, as it is funny.

[identity profile] aelkiss.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Found that story because you linked to it a couple entries ago. Found, mind you, not read.

I don't remember when more specifically than sometime in the last year, but you said you'd dress up like Lisa for a final exam, but I don't think you had a very good idea at that point who she was and eventually conceded you probably wouldn't. I do remember we were walking through lot Y (between the chapel, Skinner, and Shoemaker) at the time, though.

(There is a flying thing in my room, but it's only a ladybug.)

Will check out [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes momentarily.

Am wondering what's with all the "Am " sentences.

Am wondering if you ever answer your phone/respond to e-mails.

Am... okay so I can't think of another.

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I do! Why, I answered my phone only tonight!

I only talk on e-mail when I have something important to say, and usually postpone it as long as possible even then, because e-mail makes me nervous. I only answer the phone when I have time to talk and am in my room and am not actively avoiding anyone and can be bothered to, because phone makes me even more nervous. I only use subject pronouns when crufty English verb conjugations render them necessary.

I would like to see Revolutions sometime, but have no preference as to when :)

[identity profile] speakerender.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Shocking, dinna answer it when I tried! And I suppose time/etc of people going could be worked out in comments for all the world to see, but slowness of replies...

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so those three rings in a row weren't all the same person! I was wondering . . .

I have no objection to e-mail, I was just waiting for somebody else to narrow it down before I said anything. My family suffers from chronic indecision on such things, as I'm sure you've noticed.

[identity profile] speakerender.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
That was what the phone call was for, I don't particularly care to call multiple times (seems like pestering) I'll try the three call rule next time *shrug*

You haven't said anything on the last few multi-invite things, even when narrowed down. I figured you were being anti-social again.

And your family indecisive? *gasp* No way... are you sure?

[identity profile] aelkiss.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't normally try more than once right in a row unless it was an emergency, like when I locked my ID card in the meeting room after a Stylus meeting once and nobody was around with card access in there. I think eventually Carissa or Jennifer or somebody opened it for me..

Haven't seen any email about Revolutions, wouldn't go anyway since I haven't even seen Reloaded. Should probably rent that and Finding Nemo at some point, maybe.

She doesn't pick up on the first few phone calls. You need to somehow let her know that you're not going away merely through her attempts at ignoring.

[identity profile] aelkiss.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but half the point of calling is for her not to answer. Besides, I wouldn't want to be too annoying. But you're playing annoying-oafish-big-sister's-boyfriend role, and so your job is to be annoying;-)

You three are not allowed to gang up against me in my own journal. Go over to [livejournal.com profile] reclusivewaffle's or someplace if you need to plot nefariously, it's lonely there.

*sighs* Oh for the days when [livejournal.com profile] speakerender was the only rl person whom I knew followed lj . .

c(:

[identity profile] speakerender.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Who's ganging up on you?

Yeah, weren't those the days.

[identity profile] aelkiss.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
:-P ;-)

[identity profile] reclusivewaffle.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll team up with you against those other two losers if you want.

[identity profile] speakerender.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are these losers?

[identity profile] luminousmarble.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I know you know I know [ :0 ] about #1 (and am also very curious...is Google so fast?).

I saw the history leaves out the lesbians on [livejournal.com profile] hpsquick100 (?) and then on friendsfriends [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes. Applauded.

I'm guessing the last one is a meteor of some type...no credit for me, though, as I cheated on #1.
ext_193: (Default)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Google is not usually so fast-- I'm not even sure individual fanfics on there get crawled at all. But I didn't think the section of my flist most likely to know about Martian meteorites would know what the pit of voles was at all, as they are somewhat unsullied, except by association with me.

I am being very amused by the fact that googling 'pit of voles' actually brings up an ff.net page as the fourth result, and I can't figure out *why*.

[identity profile] kaylarudbek.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Lucky Starr fanfic? Where is it? On the Pit of Voles?
ext_193: (Default)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nope! They don't seem to have any Asimov. I was trying to google for the name of the snarky Councilman they left on Mimas in Rings of Saturn because I had *such* a crush on him and wanted to request slash for the Obscure Fandom Secret Santa (http://www.intimations.org/yuletide/). (Which you should sign up for .)

Anyway, I found Beyond Asimov (http://beyondasimov.cjb.net/). Sadly, it seems to be several years abandoned, leaving the Lucky Starr one at only one chapter. :( But there's quite a few complete Robot and Foundation fics there too. . .

[identity profile] kaylarudbek.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Melannen, you are evil! No one has signed up for the David Drake yet...Daniel/Adele is calling my name...and I would be done with finals on December 16th....
ext_193: (Default)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
*Dangles rosy red apple*

I will if you will . .

Nobody's signed up for the Riddlemaster either. Is so tempting . . .

[identity profile] kaylarudbek.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I am filling out the form right now. And we only get to request four pairings! Waah! I could request and volunteer for about fourteen...
ext_193: (Default)

[identity profile] melannen.livejournal.com 2003-11-08 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I know! Narrowing down the requests is *impossible*! Wah!

And then I finally made a decision and my browser closed on me!
