I see no reason

. . .
Well, it isn't hot anymore.

Mind you, the entire walk home was about four inches underwater, and I'm very glad this year's boots are waterproof, and I no longer need a shower, but I must admit it's not hot.

Okay, WHAT GIVES WITH THE WEATHER? 85 degrees, humid, violent late afternoon thunderstorms is supposed to be July. Remember July, Maryland? That month when you decided to rain for thirty days straight? Yes, I though you did. This is November, it's supposed to be brisk and dry with occasional cold showers. Yes, I know it's our fault. I'm sorry! I didn't vote for the Republican!

. . . I'll just think of it as fireworks.

You know, I wonder why they don't celebrate Guy Fawkes Day in Harry Potter. At least, they don't in the American versions, I don't *think* they do in the British. The Gunpowder Plot was a century before the Secrecy Statute, so it certainly would have affected them. Were the wizards siding with the Catholics? Is the whole burn people on bonfires thing too touchy a subject for them? That would be a very interesting way to explore Wizard/Muggle politics before the isolationist era . . .

Not to mention Albus Dumbledore's phoenix is named after him!

Now I want to find some Guy Fawkes Day fanfic. Magical fireworks! Burn Muggles on pyres!

Nope, not in the British editions as far as I recall. I've always had the impression it's not really all that widely celebrated in Muggle Britain these days, perhaps sort of like Columbus Day here (which admittedly never had any particular traditions associated with it that I'm aware of), but I could be wrong.

Granted I understand that to some extent Halloween is in and Guy Fawkes is out these days, yes, being subsumed by American culture like everything else authentic. But the wizards seem to be somewhat behind the times in most ways; the Alleys are clearly meant to evoke early 19th/late 18th century-ish London, and they'd certainly have celebrated Bonfire Night then.

Also several people on my flist are reporting on bonfires on their streets tonight, so clearly some people still celebrate it.

Oh yes, this year's monsoon season. At least it was a change from the month-long droughts we'd had the past few summers. On the other hand, I got really tired of mowing the lawn every three days and walking around with an unbrella all the time.

You know, after this Spring and Summer, the weather in Ireland feels downright homey. Clouds. More clouds. Rain every other day. It's all oddly familiar.
