Presenting: An obscure cross-genre pun:
Venona/Vigenére is my new OTP!
/me bows. Thank yew very much!
acemyth: What is your philosophy/motto in life? Screw the Inscrutable; Eff the Ineffable.
cynthia_black: How did you choose your User Name, and what does it reveal of your character? Mevlannen is a Ler girl in the novel The Game of Zan, the one who does the boring science grunt work while her sister has adventures. I liked the story, it was semantically neutral and I liked the sound, and it seemed obscure enough to be unique to me. Then I mispelled it in the signup, which made it even *more* likely unique. It reveals I'm an SF geek who admires obscurity and can't type. Or, if you don't know the story, it reveals nothing whatsoever. I like it that way.
aome: What did you want to be "when you grew up" when you were younger? If your current job/plans are different, why did you change? Fiction writer, and/or scientist of some sort, and/or teacher, and/or farmer, and/or politician. This has not chaged although it's become more specific.
cycloethen: What was the worst nightmare you have ever had? When I dreamed the backyard was full of moose. Or that I had to perform a synchronized-swimming-type-thing wearing a dishrag for a bathing suit. Or the recurring running-from-erupting-volcano one. Or the one where President Bush is making the US into a police state . . oh, wait, that one's real.
cedar85: Tell the story behind one or more of your scars (physical, not emotional). Mom told me to crush a milk bottle for recycling, so I decided to run down the whole length of the hallway and do a flying leap, and my leg slid under the dishwasher.
I wanted to look at the fossil collection on the top of my bookshelf, but my foot slipped when I was halfway up, and I cracked my head open.
Dad lifted me up to see in the window of a Dairy Queen, and on the way down my tummy caught on his belt buckle, and when I was proudly showing the scab to my uncle, he laughed and me and said it wouldn't scar, so I made it, out of sheer perversity.
Yes, all my scars are boring.
luminousmarble: What one thing would you like your great-great-grandchildren to know about you? What one thing would you NOT want them to know? I'd like them to know everything about me, as long as I'm dead by then; hopefully a lot of my writing will be preserved, and they will. One thing? hmm. That I could sew.
naath: How do you learn (things-for-exams)? Read the textbooks, listen in class, and be very good at mining every bit of information out of the exam itself.
bopeepsheep: What was the cause of the worst physical pain you have ever been in? Hard one. Umm, when I grabbed a curling iron by the wrong end?
til_midnight: Where do you live (a country is fine, just name a place)? the US
siriaeve: What is your biggest fear? That I will fail everyone who trusts me.
amaterasu: What's the coolest thing you've ever done? (Not the best, or the most accomplished, or the most life-altering, just the coolest). Sticking a metal clothes hanger in an electrical socket. :P
shelaghc: If you could change one event from your own personal history, what would it be and how would you change it? Losing touch with Bri after fifth grade.
linaelyn: Describe the one thing have you learned in the course of your education, either inside school or outside of it, which you consider the most valuable? Time=space. And everything else is relative.
dancingrain: What memory would call up your personal Patronus spell? (in other words, what memory is your happiest or sweetest?): Making it to the second round of the CMST PI chess tournament.
glissando: Describe the three best pairs of shoes that you've ever owned - favourites because of comfort, the way they look, the brand, any reason at all. My current pair of snowboots; they're the first pair I've ever had that actually fit well enough to hike in; my first pair of jellies, because they made me a Big Girl; my handpainted canvas slip-ons.
eilanhp: If you could have been born and grown up somewhere else, where would that have been? an isolated farming village somewhere in the third world.
praetorianguard: What would you demand in exchange for giving up your personal freedoms and civil liberties? Guaranteed, neverending personal freedoms and civil liberties for everyone else, and no less. And thay'd better be able to prove it, too.
wittywibbles: If there were no laws, which (former) crime would be the first you'd commit? I would live as a wild girl in the woods.
nightfalltwen: If you could do one thing or grant one wish for someone else, what would it be? The ability to do one thing or grant one wish for someone else. And I would give it to my worst enemy.
therealmarajade: If you could know anything about your future, what would it be? Whether I ever get a PhD.
annamilton: Owing to a peculiar concatenation of events, you are the wealthiest person in the world, and the latter will end in 24 hours. Money being no object, and saving the world being impossible, what would you do during that last day? Get the heck *off* this planet.
laurelwood: If you could hunt down one childhood tormentor (whether it be bully, tattletale, mean teacher, or friend's mother who hated you for no good reason) and exact revenge upon them in some spectacular, prankish fashion without worry of consequences, who would you choose, and what would you do to him/her? I can't actually think of any, offhand; most of them I feel rather more sorry for than anything.
robynwepsley: If I offered you a chance to have anything you wanted, the cost being someone you didn't know dies, would you accept? Ooh, depends. As of now, no. If it was a deal like "I kill her or I destroy the world, Commander Catlin: You choose!" then yes. If it was me or them, maybe.
beccafran: If you could have any one superpower, what would it be? Teleportation.
hailebop: If you could punch any one person from any point in history, who would you pick? St. Paul
silverymist: If you were given the opportunity to live another life, what kind of life would you like to have? Rich 18th century-style writer/naturalist.
slytherincess: If you could alter history in one specific place, where would it be, and why? Gore wins. Just to see what would have happened.
tolarian: Assuming you (or a group of friends) conquer Earth, which section(s) of the planet would you personally desire, and why? Some small, stable, defensible island or island group. The Orkneys, maybe? Puerto Rico?
vanityfair: If you could, with no repercussions, subject anyone you wanted to one day of utter and complete torture, who would you choose, why would you choose them, and what would you do to them? Conversely, if you could give anyone you wanted (other than yourself) one day of perfect happiness, who/why/what would you choose? I wouldn't.
slowfox: Hollywood called: they're filming your life story. Who do you cast as yourself? Prairie Dawn.
angelofthenorth: They want to make your life into a Cartoon. Which graphic artist do you want to draw it? Aaron McGruder.
deralte: Your favourite Blackadder episode and why? Sadly,I have only seen Blackadder once, and that was some sort of pledge-drive-special thing. I could give you my favorite Red Dwarf episode . . .
tybalt_quin: Movie adaptations of books - heinous, evil and always disappointing or perfectly acceptable? Inevitable and occasionally bearable.
primroseburrows: What one song brings up the strongest emotion (negative or positive) for you ? Songs don't usually do that for me . . . But the Ashokan Farewell still makes me sad.
manubai: If you had the choice to live in any fictional world, as in transposed into a book, which one would it be? Please explain why. So many choices. Heinlein's Tertius, maybe, or Duane's Five Kingdoms. Because they're societies that work, logically yet organically.
katrionaa: What is your favorite artwork (painting, sculpture, etching, whatever) and why? I have been admiring De La Tour lately. His Magdalene with Skull is lovely.
fharraige: Name twelve songs for the soundtrack of your life. Basically picked at random: Greenday - Good Riddance; Beatles - Paperback Writer; Byrds - Turn, turn, turn; Simple Gifts and God Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens and Ode to Joy; the cantina song from Star Wars; The Old Prairie Schooner; The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall; A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste; I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day; The Alley Cat
eurydice9: If you could have only five cds, which would they be? No burned cds count - only ones you physically purchase in a store/online. Don't buy CD's. Um, the Civil War sountrack, a Bizet collection with L'Arlesiene Suite, the Shrek soundtrack, the FOTR soundtrack, CATS.
magoo42: Batman or Superman? Batman.
ladyvorkosigan: What fictional character do you most identify with and why? Ones of my own invention? Failing thaat, whatever I'm currently reading.
0100111: True or false: pineapple on pizza is wrong. Pineapple on Pizza is the One True Way.
wcspegasus: If you were a color, what would you be and why? Universe-colored. Beige!
soupytwist: If you could be an inanimate object, what would you be and why? A memory book, about half full and completely disorganized.
ladycrookshanks: Assuming reincarnation exists, who do you think you may have been in a past life? How would you like to come back in the next? Probably a bit richer and cannier and unhappier; a turn-of-the-century plutocrat's daughter. Next? Lord knows. A saint.
ivan_k: If you were a weapon, what would you be and why? A simple staff, badly balanced and better for walking than fighting, but useful enough for defense.
risti: Do you wear orange? Why/Why not? Yes, becuase at one point it was my favorite color, and I still have some of the clothes.
seren_himitsu: If you could ask your deity of choice one question and have it answered, what would you ask? I would ask Christ exactly how literal he was being with that "only son of God" stuff, and what he thinks of the Apostles' Creed.
moonrunner: True/False: Green buffalos come from Albania. (seriously, now.) False, as far as I know; isn't that where Naugas are from?
angua9: If remaining a virgin (or abstaining from sex) for the rest of your life would allow you to do real magic, would you do it? What do you mean? It already does. I would stick with it only as long as the magic meant more to me than family; as was probably intended in that sort of deal.
drbear: How much money would it take for you to appear naked (full-frontal) for five seconds on national television? I wouln''t take money. I might do it on principle, though.
piperx: Would you rather be
jiggery_pokery: You can start any business of your choice, whether for-profit or non-profit, regardless of whether this business exists practically in the world or not and whether there's an existing business model to make your chosen business work or not. Irrespective of what it is, it will start off moderately successfully and eventually become very successful. You will make a very satisfactory wage and your investors/sponsors will be very pleased with your work. What business would you start? An incredibly historically accurate colonial-era farm, where tourists pay to play indentured servants, and I'm the Lady of the house.
sofie_elisabeth: Would you sacrifice an unknown portion of your life so that a loved one could live for one more year? Me and said loved one (especially if said loved one was related to me) would play 'You decide' 'No, you' 'It's your life!' 'It's your choice!' until the time limit on the offer expired.
