No! It wasn't! It wasn't necessary to kill the Asgard, either. (And the way they did it in both cases - basically "we will commit racial suicide because you (white/American) Earth Humans are just so much better than us, we will clear the way for you!" was so very very problematic; that was probably the last straw that turned me off the Stargate franchise.)
