I have the same thoughts about the self-selection of the polls, and yeah, if the result had been less clear and pronounced I probably wouldn't have made this post (I might have still posted, but it would have been a very different post.) A meta-analysis coming out to 60% allows for a fairly large margin of error...
I was talking with one of the non-fanfic people on my circle about that just tonight! He, too, is curious about how this compares to demographics in a) his countercultural spaces and b) gay-rights-supporting communities in general.
I'm a mostly-queer woman who writes mostly het, gen, and other so I agree that it would be interesting to check the correlations. (Also to see how many people who don't primarily/solely write m/m, or don't write at all, consider themselves slashers anyway.)
