I think a lot of those polls have a few het, gen, and f/f people in them! Shh, don't tell! (Actually, a) I suspect mixing in exclusive het & exclusive gen people wouldn't *increase* the queer numbers anyway, and b) I have never actually written any m/m pairing fic (well, no, there was one, it was for the first yuletide); I think I can be a slasher anyway if I want to.)
I think the slash-writers who shift identity from straight to queer while they're in fandom are *really important* to the discussions going on, but it's not something people seem to be wanting to talk about. Which is sad. (It's also kind of hard to talk about without running into the issue of defining people's sexuality for them, but talking about shifting self-identity is so worthwhile.)
