Puppy will install on a system, which is probably what I'm going to try later tonight. The main reason I wanted to switch to ubuntu is that Puppy wants to use .pup packages to install software, and anything else is a ton of hassle, and of course nobody except the puppy website bothers with .pup packages, so there's a lot of limit on what I can do without having to mess for hours. But if Ubuntu is going to require hours of messing anyway, there goes the advantage.
