melannen: Romulan Commander Ael T'Rllailleiu, in casual clothes, drawing the Sword From The Empty Chair (star trek)

day comes up new though empty-hearted

DUDE I HAVE JUST REALISED. Post "The Empty Chair", the Romulan sun is synchronized to Earth's sun such that if Eisn ever goes nova, Sol will too. I wonder when Spock Prime was planning to mention *that* little tidbit...

(....I wonder if the Federation authorities will be as eager to help out the refugee Vulcans when it comes out that Nero was avenging Earth, too...)

ETA: YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I REALIZED? Rihannsu is the only "constructed" language ever successfully adopted by an entire planetary population. In Rihannsu canon, Uhura is doing her doctoral dissertation on constructed languages. In Reboot canon, Uhura is the only person on the Enterprise who knows Rihannsu. Suddenly an entire Spock/Uhura backstory has grown entirely unaided in my hindbrain.

(My tradition, when getting into a new fandom, is to become obsessed with finding crossovers that make it make more sense. I think this is the first time I've been crossing it over with *itself* though. ...no, wait, I take that back; I worked out a whole backstory to make Geoffrey of Monmouth work in the same universe as BBC Merlin.)

Anyway, inspired by the stories [personal profile] zvi linked on [community profile] vulcanreforged, I have now actually started writing the story where the Vulcans settle on ch'Rihan and hang out with the t'Rllaillieu. It is going to require a total re-read of the Rihannsu books, though, which, tragedy. Also, I have made a bunch of icons from the Rihannsu book covers - they are posted at [community profile] starry_sea and at [community profile] rihannsu, which you should join if you have any interest in this sort of thing.

Here is a list of other things that will happen in the Epic Reboot Fixit Sequel That I Will Never Write:

1. Kirk's Captaincy of the Enterprise was intended to be short-term and ceremonial, only while the Enterprise is in spacedock for repairs; before she actually returns to duty, he'll be re-assigned to a small, low-stakes science vessel to get some actual command experience. The spacedock assignment to Enterprise was intended to be in the nature of a punishment detail. It's working.

2. Pike is going to be Captain of the Enterprise again. He's on Earth now doing rehab, adjusting to adaptive technology, and re-learning his limits. But by the time the Enterprise's repairs are over (including a new Captain's Chair and a few other accessibility modifications) he will be back in command.

3. Kirk is getting the old captain's chair as a souvenir. He plans to have lots of sex on it.

4. The casualties among the crews of the starships destroyed in the Battle of Vulcan were not nearly complete - around 75% of the cadets survived, although many of them were badly injured. Gaila was one of the injured survivors. Kirk finds himself spending a lot of time in Starfleet Medical, visiting the injured, and starting to think about what real command is going to be like. (Also, he's kind of jealous, because Pike's set himself up as a father figure to all the injured cadets, and Kirk's stuck on the ship doing logistics & supply paperwork every day instead.)

5. Number One was on a research sabbatical during the events of the movie, and returns shortly afterward to set things in order. She's smarter than McCoy, cooler than Spock, and more kickass than Kirk. She bonds instantly with Uhura, and the men have no idea what to do with her, except for Sulu, who gets a new fencing partner. Number One is from a majority Islamic colony planet, wears the headscarf, is played by an actress of Middle Eastern descent, is dating Pike, and is all-around awesome. Kirk never gets her first name, either.

6. It turns out that Keenser is a fairly high-level agent of Starfleet Intelligence, sent to keep an eye on Scotty as well as on Vulcan. Scotty is now in trouble with Command for a variety of things - possibly even more than Kirk is - starting with the fact that he consistently harassed Keenser, and ending with the fact that he went AWOL from his duty station. Kirk's first experience with Starfleet politics is trying to keep Scotty on his ship instead of in jail. He's doing better than he expected; he used to be completely unable to sit still through committee meetings.

7. Spock Prime had a mating bond with his Kirk, and in the mind-meld, the dormant bond was partially and pathologically re-activated. It's had the effect of giving both of them some badly-needed reserves of serenity. It's letting Spock hold himself together emotionally, and letting Kirk fake being adult; neither of them are aware of this.

8. Young Spock is aware of this. Young Spock does not react well to the discovery. Young Spock writes to his counterpart about it, and they kind of accidentally become the universe's most dysfunctional pen pals. Uhura finds the whole thing unendingly amusing, which reminds both Spocks of their mother.

9. Young Spock also happens to be in possession of the last surviving S'harien other than the Sword in the Empty Chair, and he knows he ought to give it back to Surak's House as part of the rebuilding, but when his older self asks him for it, he finds himself being intractably stubborn for no logical reason he can deduce. (Spock Prime wants the S'harien because he is trying to manipulate the Vulcan High Council into taking the Vulcan refugee fleet to ch'Rihan to ask for refuge among their cousins, and needs the symbol.)

10. He does talk Spock into giving him the sword (after some major concessions) and talks the Vulcans into trying the Romulans. The Triumvirate, gloating, allows them to remain, but on the condition that they are able to buy or rent land to live on. Whereupon the tr'Rllaillieu immediately offers to lease them land on an estate right outside Ra'tleifi, mostly to thumb his nose at the Praetors. Spock and Sarek and Ael and Charvon and Tafv and Hdaen and Nniol and company spend the next twenty years tag-teaming the Romulan government (and people) until, by the end, they've created something that isn't Vulcan reborn, but is an heir that Vulcan and Rihannsu alike can be proud of.

Too bad it has no actual plot or anything to tie it together. :P

If you added a little more parallel structure to each of the parts, and worked on the overall structure, you could have a non-traditional short story, instead of the epic fix-it.

Eh, if you flushed each bit out to a long short story, say ten thousand words or so, you'd have a book length anthology.

I would read it.
